About this piece

Indigo in a smooth weave with short sleeves, the summer jinbei cut lighter

This jinbei set is cut from a smooth cloth rather than a crinkled one, and the sleeves are short, and both changes are for the heat. The top wraps and ties at the side with one patch pocket, the sleeves stop at the elbow, and the trousers are loose and plain, all in a flat indigo cotton weave with a dry hand that falls close to the body rather than standing off it. It is the jinbei for someone who finds gauze too soft and wants the cloth to have a little structure.

Indigo in a flat weave is the cloth of the Japanese work jacket, and this set looks like one cut for summer: square, plain, dark, and short in the sleeve so the forearm is free.

The name, Rurikon, is lapis navy, the deep indigo with a little violet in it that the old dyers reached with the most dips in the vat, and the cloth is that colour.

The weave is cotton, smooth rather than crinkled, so it takes an iron if you want a crease and does without one if you do not. It is light, it breathes, and it softens with washing the way indigo cloth does, going a shade paler at the seams first.

Wear the top crossed left over right and knot the tie at the hip; the trousers sit at the waist on a soft band. At home it is the set for the person who likes their loungewear to look like clothes. Out, with sandals, it is a summer outfit that reads workwear from the street and jinbei from the table.

Up close the weave shows its fine grain and the indigo shows its depth. From across a garden it is a dark blue two-piece with short sleeves and a long, easy line.

It goes with white, grey, denim and bare feet. If the crinkled sets are the soft option, this is the crisp one, and it is the one that will fade into something better over three summers.

The trousers are the same indigo weave, cut loose with a soft band at the waist, and they are the pair most likely to be worn on their own, with a white T-shirt, as summer trousers. Wash the set cold and together, so the blue fades evenly.

Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the jinbei

What is a jinbei?

The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it cotton?

The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
