About this piece

Deep blue glazed tea cup with a gold landscape of pines and hills, two designs

A landscape in gold on a cup so dark it is nearly black. This yunomi is the tall handleless tea cup of a Japanese table, in a deep blue-black glaze that shines, with a landscape painted round the body in gold: on one, pines on a rocky shore with hills behind and a boat; on the other, pines and a pavilion with its roof among the trees. The gold is a warm one and it catches the light as the cup turns.

It is the cup for green tea at the end of a meal, and the landscape is what a person looks at while the tea cools.

The name, Yunomi, is the tea cup, the everyday one without a handle, and the cup is that shape.

The cup is a glazed ceramic, tall and slightly waisted, with a dark blue glaze fired to a gloss and the landscape applied in gold over it, the inside glazed the same dark blue. It holds a full cup of tea and it is held in two hands.

Use it for green tea, which is what it is for, or coffee, which it does not mind. Hold it with one hand round the body and the other under the base, as the Japanese hold a cup without a handle, and the landscape faces the person opposite, which is the point of painting it on the outside.

The gold is the detail: applied over the glaze in fine lines and washes, the pines drawn needle by needle and the hills in a soft gradient, and it is the kind of decoration that wears if it is scrubbed, so it is not. The two designs are two views of the same coast, and the gold on both is applied by hand, so the pines are not identical from one cup to the next. Bought as a pair they make a set for two.

From across a table it is a dark cup with a gold band. From close the band is a landscape, the pines show their needles, and the glaze its depth. It is the cup for a person who drinks tea slowly.

Wash by hand in warm water with a soft cloth; the gold does not like a dishwasher or a scourer. Dry upside down.

One size, a full cup of tea, about the height of a hand. The two designs are the same cup with a different landscape.

Questions about the japanese tableware

What is in the sake set?

A corked flask, a tall jar to warm the flask in hot water, six small cups and a round tray, all in the same speckled stoneware with a blue carp. Fill the jar with hot water, stand the flask in it for a few minutes, and pour for someone else.

How do I make matcha with the set?

A scoop and a half of powder in the bowl, a splash of water just off the boil, and whisk in a fast zigzag until it foams. Rinse the whisk in water only and dry it on its stand, tines down, so they keep their curl.

What are they made of?

The sake set and the tea cup are glazed ceramic; the matcha bowl and stand are stoneware; the whisk and the scoop are bamboo; the bento box is bent wood with wooden cutlery and a printed cloth bag. Each page says which.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Can they go in the dishwasher?

The stoneware sake pieces can; the cork cannot. The gold tea cup, the wooden bento box, the bamboo whisk and scoop are hand wash only, and the bamboo is wiped, not soaked.

How big are they?

The sake cups hold two mouthfuls; the tea cup a full cup; the matcha bowl one serving with room to whisk; the bento box a lunch for one. Every piece is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
