About this piece
Dragons and clouds printed all over dark joggers, waves at the ankle, black or red
No plain cloth on these. Dragons coil across both legs in cream on black, with clouds between them and a band of waves rising from each ankle to the shin, in the style of a brocade, printed edge to edge on a slubbed cloth with a drawstring waist and a gathered ankle. The pattern does not repeat across the two legs. It comes in black, as in the photograph, and in red.
It is the all-over pair of the collection and the one that reads as a textile rather than a print, because the dragons are drawn as a brocade would draw them: flat, outlined, dense.
The name, Watatsumi, is the sea god, the dragon of the ocean, and the waves at the ankle are his.
The cut is a relaxed jogger with room through the thigh and an ankle that gathers on an elastic over the shoe, sitting at the waist on a drawstring. The cloth is a linen-look cotton blend with a slubbed, dry hand and a little weight, chosen because a print or an embroidery this fine needs a ground with body, and because the slub gives a plain colour somewhere to go. The pattern is printed, not woven.
Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a haori or a sukajan over the top when it turns, and nothing else with a pattern below the waist.
They wash cold, inside out, and dry on a line; the cloth does not crease into a map and does not need an iron, which is the point of a trouser cut for a street rather than an office.
From across a street they are dark pants with a pale pattern all over. From close the dragons separate from the clouds, the waves show their crests, and the slub shows through the print. They are the pair for a plain top and nothing else.
The waist is a flat elastic under a white drawstring, the one plain thing on the pants, and the pockets are set in the side seams. The gather at the ankle is an elastic in a channel, and the waves rise from it.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese pants
What kind of trousers are these?
Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.
Embroidered or printed?
Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.
What we sell, and what we don't
