About this piece

Pastel tweed low-top sneakers with a star charm, in green, purple or black

Tweed on a sneaker, in pastels. The upper of these low-tops is a woven tweed in mint, blue and cream with smooth panels at the toe and the heel, a zigzag panel stitched down the side, laces in a soft green with a star-shaped charm threaded on, and a cupsole with a mint base. The purple version turns the tweed lilac and the charm purple, with a word on the tongue; the black version is darker throughout.

It is the softest sneaker in the collection and the most textural, and the tweed is what makes it: a woven cloth on a shoe that is usually smooth.

The name, Awaiiro, is the pale colour, the pastel, and the shoe is woven in them.

The sole is a flat cupsole in rubber with a vulcanised look, the upper is a woven tweed with smooth synthetic panels with a padded collar and tongue, and the shoe is cut low. It is the skate shoe, the shape of the eighties, and it is built to be worn every day rather than skated in.

Wear them with a white sock pulled up, as in the photograph, which is how every pair in this collection was shot and how they are worn in Tokyo: the sock is part of the shoe. White trousers, black jeans, the cropped pants from the range, and nothing else on the foot that argues.

The tweed is a woven cloth bonded to a backing, so it does not stretch, and the zigzag panel is stitched over it. The star charm is plastic and clips to the lace; it can be taken off.

The last is a Japanese one, wider at the toe box than a European sneaker and lower at the instep, which is part of why they run small: the length is short and the width is generous. A wide foot will be comfortable; a narrow one will want the thicker sock.

Wipe them with a damp cloth; do not machine wash. A soft brush for the mesh, a cloth for the panels, and they are ready for the next day.

From across a street they are pale sneakers with a fleck. From close the tweed shows its weave in three colours, the zigzag its stitching, and the star its shine. They are the sneaker for a pastel and a sock that matches.

Sizes run from EU 36 to 44. They are cut to Asian sizing and run small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese sneakers

What is a Japanese sneaker?

A sneaker designed in the Tokyo streetwear tradition: chunky soles, layered panels, knit collars, colour used with intent and a white sock worn pulled up.

Do they run small?

Yes. They are cut on an Asian last, shorter in length and wider at the toe than a European sneaker. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger.

What are they made of?

Synthetic, mesh, knit or brushed uppers on moulded rubber or EVA soles, depending on the pair. The fabric line on each product page says which.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear them?

With a white sock pulled up, as photographed, and a trouser that shows the shoe: cropped, tapered or a jogger with a ribbed cuff.

How do I clean them?

Wipe with a damp cloth and a soft brush for the mesh. Do not machine wash, and keep them out of direct heat.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
