About this piece
Sky blue in a smooth cotton weave, a wrap top with a pocket and trousers
These Japanese pyjamas are cut from a flat cotton rather than a gauze, and the difference is crispness: the wrap top holds its edge, the patch pocket sits square, and the straight trousers fall clean. The colour is a sky blue, pale and slightly greyed, the blue of a shirt that has been washed a hundred times. The top crosses and ties at the side, the sleeves stop below the elbow, and nothing is printed or trimmed.
It is the women's jinbei in its plainest form, and the one that looks most like a garment you could open the door in, because a flat pale blue has the manners of a shirt. It is the set to wear when the postman is due.
The name, Mizuiro, means water colour, the pale blue of clear water, and it is the traditional name for this exact shade.
The weave is cotton, smooth rather than crinkled, with a dry hand that takes an iron if you want a crease and does without one if you do not. It is light, it breathes, and it dries fast. It creases a little at the elbow, the way a shirt does, and the crease looks intended.
Cross the fronts left over right and knot the tie at the hip; the trousers sit at the waist on a soft band. Sleep in it, live in it, and wear the top over a white vest in summer as a light shirt, which it passes for.
Up close the weave shows its fine grain. From across a bedroom it is a pale blue two-piece with a tie at the hip and a pocket, and it looks like a uniform for a very calm job. That job is sleeping, and the set is good at it.
Wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; it dries in an hour and the blue stays even. An iron on the collar edge, if you want one, takes thirty seconds.
It goes with bare feet, white sheets, and a blue-and-white bowl. Of the smooth-weave wrap sets, this is the blue one, and blue is the colour a wrap top was born in. It is the blue of the work jacket, made soft.
Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the jinbei
What is a jinbei?
The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it cotton?
The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.
