About this piece

White tabi socks with a split toe, the sock worn with geta, zori and sandals

One toe on its own. These are tabi, the Japanese sock with a split between the big toe and the other four, so the thong of a geta, a zori or a sandal passes between them and the sock stays on. They are white, ribbed, cut to the ankle like a crew sock, and they are the sock in every photograph of every geta in this collection.

They are the least expensive thing in the shop and the one that makes the footwear work, and they are worn from spring to autumn under a yukata and all year under a house slipper.

The name is the Japanese one, and the split-toe sock is older than the Western sock in Japan: the traditional tabi is a stiff cloth boot with a hook fastening, and this is its knitted cousin, the everyday one.

The sock is a ribbed knit with a little stretch, the big toe knitted as its own pocket and the other four together, with a ribbed cuff at the ankle and a reinforced heel and toe. It is a crew length, which shows above a geta and under a trouser.

Wear them with the geta, the zori, the waraji or the flip flops in the collection, or with a thong sandal of any kind, and the strap goes between the toes without rubbing. Wear them on their own in a house; the split toe spreads the foot and it is oddly comfortable once it is used to. They also go under a martial-arts uniform, and they are the sock a jinbei is worn with in a house with a wooden floor.

The split is the detail: it is knitted, not sewn, so there is no seam between the toes to rub against a thong, and the pocket for the big toe is cut generously. The rib runs the full length so the sock holds up without elastic.

From across a room they are white socks. From close the toe shows its split, the rib its lines, and the cuff its stretch. They are the sock for anyone who has bought a geta and wondered what to wear with it.

Machine wash warm, tumble dry low. They are socks, and they are treated like socks; the split toe does not need anything the other four do not.

One size, stretch to fit an adult foot from about EU 36 to 44. Sold as a pair.
