About this piece

Hokusai's coast at sunset as three hanging panels, pines on a shore and Fuji beyond

A shore at sunset, in three pieces. This is Hokusai's view of the beach at Shichirigahama on the Sagami coast: a shore of dark pines and rounded green hills runs across the picture, the bay lies pale beyond, the sky goes from blue to orange at the horizon, and Fuji stands white and small at the end of the coast. Here it is printed across three tall cloth panels that hang side by side on wooden rails, and the coast runs through the gaps.

It is the calmest of the three triptychs in the collection, and the one for a bedroom.

The name, Yuhi, is the evening sun, the light of the print, and the picture is the coast in it.

The image is printed across three tall cloth panels, each held top and bottom in a pair of wooden rails that clamp the cloth and carry a cord for hanging, so the three hang side by side with a narrow gap between them and the picture reads across the gaps. The colours are the print's own, and the cartouche and the signature sit in the corner of the left panel, as on the Edo sheet.

Hang the three on three nails at the same height, a finger's width apart, and step back; the gaps become part of the picture. It is the format for a wide wall, a sofa, a bed head or a hallway, and it is the one people photograph. The panels roll for moving and hang again in a minute.

The pines are the detail: drawn as dark green clumps on the hills of the middle panel, they are the darkest thing in the picture and they give the pale bay its distance. Fuji sits on the right-hand panel, small and white against the orange band of the sky.

Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Dust with a soft dry cloth; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years. Roll it, do not fold it, if it comes down.

From across a room it is a green and orange coast in three panels. From close the pines show their clumps, the bay its boats, and the mountain its size. It is the piece for a wide wall over a bed and a person who likes the evening.

Three sizes, each for three panels: 30 by 60 cm, 40 by 85 cm and 50 by 102 cm per panel. The smallest set spans about a metre; the largest, a metre and a half. The image is the same in all three.

Questions about the japanese wall art

Are these original prints?

No. They are reproductions of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, woodblock prints from the 1830s that are long out of copyright, printed on canvas or cloth from the images. Every page says so.

Canvas or poster?

The single views are printed on a textured canvas stretched round a wooden frame, with the image wrapping the edges, so they hang without a frame or glass. The three triptychs are cloth panels held in wooden hanging rails with a cord.

What sizes are there?

Singles: 40 by 60, 50 by 75 or 60 by 90 cm. Triptychs: three panels each of 30 by 60, 40 by 85 or 50 by 102 cm. Every print is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I hang them?

A single canvas hangs on one nail or picture hook. A triptych hangs on three nails at the same height, a finger's width apart; the gaps become part of the picture.

How do I look after them?

Dust with a soft dry cloth; do not wet. Keep out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from radiators. Roll a triptych panel if it comes down; never fold it.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
