About this piece

Sun-faded denim shorts, yellowed at the thigh like a pair left out, brown or blue

These shorts look like they were left on a washing line for a summer. The denim is dark at the seams and the hem and fades to a yellow-brown across the front of the thigh and the seat, the way indigo goes when the sun has had it, front and back. The cut is a relaxed five-pocket short to the knee with a clean hem. It comes in brown, as in the photograph, and in a blue version where the fade goes to pale blue rather than yellow.

It is the pair in the collection with the most convincing age, and the yellow is the tell: bleach goes white, and sun goes this.

The name, Hizarashi, is sun-bleached, the thing left in the light, and the shorts are that thing.

The cloth is denim, washed so the colour has already moved where a pair of shorts moves it, at the thigh and the seat, chosen because denim shorts are the ones worn most in a summer and the ones that look best at the end of one. The cut is a relaxed knee-length short with a five-pocket front, a button or zip fly and a waist that takes a belt.

Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a camp shirt open over the top, and nothing else with a pattern.

The fade is in the wash, placed where the sun would have placed it, and it goes on deepening at the thigh with wear. The rise sits at the waist and the hem is turned clean.

They wash cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang to dry; the wash keeps moving at the seams, which is the point of denim, and the frayed hems fray a little more and then stop.

From across a street they are dark shorts gone pale at the front. From close the fade shows its yellow against the indigo and the seams their dark edge. They are the pair for someone who wants denim that looks like it has lived outdoors.

Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese shorts

What kind of shorts are these?

Denim shorts in the Japanese street style, knee-length and relaxed: washed, frayed, pieced, patched, embroidered or printed, with one pair in leather-look synthetic and one long cargo short in a woven cloth. Every page says which, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

Cotton denim for the denim shorts, raw or washed as the page says; a synthetic leather for the studded pair; a polyester-cotton blend for the cargo short.

Will the fraying continue?

A little, then it stops at the stitching. Raw hems are cut and washed once before they reach you, so the fray has started and settled.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang to dry. Rhinestones go in a wash bag; the leather-look pair is wiped, not washed.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
