About this piece
Wind god and thunder god on a black flight jacket, small in front, large behind
Both gods, twice. On the chest of this bomber, the thunder god with his drums on the left and the wind god with his sack on the right, small, facing each other across the zip. On the back, the same two in full, the thunder god red-brown with his ring of gold drums and the wind god green with his sack, riding grey clouds across the black. The jacket is a flight jacket: matte black nylon, black ribbing, a metal zip, a zipped pocket on the left sleeve.
It is the most embroidered of the bombers, and the one where the matte cloth does the most work, because the gold drums and the green robe read like paint on black lacquer.
The name, Kinun, is the golden cloud, the cloud the gods ride on the screens, embroidered here in grey with gold at the edges.
The gods are embroidered, not printed, in satin stitch with the gold kept metallic. The body is a matte nylon blend with a light quilted lining, the cloth of a flight jacket rather than a souvenir one, with ribbed knit at the collar, cuffs and hem, a metal zip, a slash pocket at each hip and a zipped pocket on the left sleeve. It washes cold, inside out, and dries flat.
Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black with black jeans. It goes with everything that has no pattern.
From across a street it is a black bomber with two figures on it. From close the gods have every fold of their robes, the drums their tomoe, the sack its cord, and the small pair on the chest their faces. It is the sukajan for someone who wants the whole screen and a jacket they can wear to work.
The back also carries a small embroidered script above the gods; it is the maker's mark of the design, and it is small.
A flight jacket differs from a satin sukajan in the cloth and the collar: the nylon is matte and takes the weather, and the ribbing is plain and closes at the neck. It is cut a little slimmer, so a knit goes under it in the cold.
Sizes run from S to 3XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the sukajan jacket
What is a sukajan?
The Japanese souvenir jacket: a satin bomber with a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, embroidered on the back and chest with dragons, tigers, koi, cranes and gods, first sewn in Yokosuka for American sailors after the war. Ours keep the cut and the embroidery; a few are the same idea on a flight jacket, a denim jacket or a velvet-look cloth, and their pages say so.
Is the embroidery real?
Yes. Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch. That is why the jackets weigh what they do and why the back catches the light.
Is it reversible?
No. None of our sukajan is reversible. The lining is a lining.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
A satin blend for the classic sukajan, a matte nylon blend for the flight-jacket versions, washed denim for the one denim jacket, and a velvet-look or leather-look synthetic where the page says so. Never silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dry flat; never tumble an embroidered jacket. The leather-look jacket is wiped, not washed.
What we sell, and what we don't
