Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We name every garment for what it is: a kimono jacket is not a haori, an unlined kimono is not a yukata.

About this piece
Cranes with blue-green wings over gold pines and white surf, on deep green
Green is rare in Japanese cloth and rarer still on a haori, and this one makes the most of it. The ground is a deep green, closer to pine than to sage in the photographs, and across it a landscape has been printed: waves breaking in white and gold, gold pine trees, hills drawn as gold lines, and cranes crossing all of it with white bodies, red crowns and wings shaded from white to blue-green at the tips. The front band is cream, a flat strip that runs down both sides of the opening and stops the print cleanly at the edge.
The palette is what makes it. Green, gold, white and a little red is the palette of a lacquered tray or a folding screen, and it looks rich in a way that black-ground prints cannot. It also looks good in daylight, which not every printed jacket does.
The name, Wakatake, means young bamboo, the bright green of new shoots in May, and it is the traditional name for this family of greens. It is a spring name for a jacket that works all summer.
It is printed, not embroidered, with the gold printed as a warm tone rather than a foil and the white of the cranes kept crisp. The cloth is polyester with a smooth surface and a dry hand, chosen because a green this deep must stay even through washing, and because a summer haori should hang light. Three-quarter sleeves, open front with the cream band, no fastening, hem at the hip.
At three metres it is a green jacket with pale movement across the back and a cream stripe down the front. At thirty centimetres the pines have needles, the waves have foam, and the crane wings shade feather by feather from white to blue. It is built to be read at both distances.
The cut is a short open haori, square at the shoulder and relaxed through the body. Over a white tee, the cream band and the white tee line up and the green frames them. Over black, the green goes deeper and the gold does the work. It goes with cream trousers, black trousers, stone, and plain shoes. It is the haori to choose when everyone else is in navy.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the haori
Is a haori the same as a kimono jacket?
Close cousins. A haori is the short coat worn open over a kimono in Japan. Ours keep that shape, a flat front band, wide three-quarter sleeves and a hem at the hip, and are cut to sit over a T-shirt. A kimono jacket is the same idea with a plainer edge and, often, a tie or toggle.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every haori in this collection is polyester, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers, and nothing else patterned: the print is the point. Three-quarter sleeves make it a spring-to-autumn layer, and a knit underneath carries it into the first cold weeks.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
