About this piece

A red shrine gate on the chest, a fox-masked woman on the back

The figure on the back of this sukajan is a woman in white with a fox mask pushed up on her head and nine fox tails fanning out behind her, kneeling among pink lotus flowers with red flames curling round, a lantern and a small red seal beside her. On the chest, a red torii gate on the left, and on the right a koi in orange leaping through flames. Black body, red sleeves, ribbing black with gold stripes.

It is the most narrative of the sukajan, a scene rather than an animal, and the story it tells is the oldest one in the collection: the fox spirit who becomes a woman, at the gate of the shrine that belongs to her.

The name, Hyakki, is the night parade of a hundred demons, the procession of spirits in the old scrolls, and the fox woman is the one at the front of it.

Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light quilted lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, which is the construction the sukajan has had since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka in the late forties. It zips at the front and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.

Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black to make the red sleeves and the white figure the only light. Nothing else with a pattern.

From across a street it is a black-and-red bomber with a pale figure on the back. From close the woman has every fold of her robe, the tails every hair, the lotus every petal, and the torii on the chest its crossbeams. It is the sukajan for someone who wants a story on their back, and this one has a good one.

The sleeves are set in raglan, and the torii on the chest sits high on the left with the koi answering it on the right, so the front tells the beginning of the story and the back tells the end. The gold stripes in the ribbing pick up the lantern and the seal.

Sizes run from M to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the sukajan jacket

What is a sukajan?

The Japanese souvenir jacket: a satin bomber with a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, embroidered on the back and chest with dragons, tigers, koi, cranes and gods, first sewn in Yokosuka for American sailors after the war. Ours keep the cut and the embroidery; a few are the same idea on a flight jacket, a denim jacket or a velvet-look cloth, and their pages say so.

Is the embroidery real?

Yes. Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch. That is why the jackets weigh what they do and why the back catches the light.

Is it reversible?

No. None of our sukajan is reversible. The lining is a lining.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

A satin blend for the classic sukajan, a matte nylon blend for the flight-jacket versions, washed denim for the one denim jacket, and a velvet-look or leather-look synthetic where the page says so. Never silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dry flat; never tumble an embroidered jacket. The leather-look jacket is wiped, not washed.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
