About this piece

Red hannya mask in painted resin with gold horns, gold eyes and gold teeth, strapped

Red face, gold horns, and a mouth that does not close. This is the hannya, the mask of the Noh stage for a woman turned to a demon by jealousy, cast in resin and painted in a deep red that shades to black at the edges, with two gold horns curling back from the brow, gold-rimmed eyes, and an open mouth full of gold teeth. The inside is black and the straps cross behind the head.

It is the mask everyone knows from tattoos and sukajan, and it is the one that looks at you from across a room. In red, it is the version at full anger.

The name, Shakki, is the red demon, the hannya at its most enraged, and the red is that.

The mask is cast in a hard resin, thick enough to take a knock, painted by hand in layers so the colour deepens in the folds and lightens on the brow, with the horns, the eyes and the teeth picked out in gold, and the inside finished black. It fastens with two crossed adjustable elastic straps, and the eyes are open.

Wear it with the straps crossed behind the head and adjusted once, which holds it without a hand, and it sits on the face with the eyes at eye level and the mouth clear. It is a mask for a festival, a party or a stage, and it breathes better than it looks.

The shading is the detail: the red is darkest in the folds beside the nose and lightest on the cheekbones, so the face reads as flesh rather than paint, and the gold on the horns is brushed rather than flat. The teeth are separate gold points in a black mouth.

Hung on a wall it is a face in the room, and that is how most of them end up: on a nail by the door, over a desk, in a hallway where a guest meets it first. It is photographed at the same scale as every mask in the collection, so the pages compare.

Wipe with a soft dry cloth; keep it out of a hot car and direct sun, which dull the paint. The straps unclip for washing.

From across a room it is a red face with horns. From close the paint shows its shading, the horns their brushed gold, and the mouth its teeth. It is the mask for a person who has the hannya on their jacket and wants it on the wall.

One size, adult. The mask covers the face from the hairline to below the chin, and the straps adjust from a teenager's head to a large adult's.

Questions about the japanese masks

Which masks can be worn and which are for the wall?

The hannya, fox, cat, tengu, hyottoko, Noh, samurai half masks, the ninja mask and the armoured mask all have straps and are worn. The six unpainted wooden masks are carved to hang; they have cord holes, not straps.

What are they made of?

Hannya: painted resin. Fox and cat: hand-painted PVC. Samurai half masks: painted latex. Wooden masks: a single block of pale wood, unpainted. The others are moulded and painted. The fabric line on each page says which.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

What size are they?

One size, adult; the fox and hyottoko masks fit a teenager too. Straps adjust. The large wooden folk mask is bigger than a face; every mask is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.

What is the difference between a hannya and an oni?

A hannya is the Noh mask of a woman turned demon by jealousy, with horns, gold eyes and a mouth that does not close; its colour, red, green or blue, marks how far she has gone. An oni is the mountain demon of folklore, and the wooden one here is that.

How do I look after them?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep resin, PVC and latex out of a hot car and direct sun. Dust the wooden masks with a brush and keep them away from radiators and damp.
