About this piece

The white bow blouse over a long persimmon skirt laced at the waist, lace below

Persimmon is the orange of the Japanese autumn, the fruit hanging on bare branches in November, and it is the colour of this skirt. The blouse is white, with a rounded collar, short puffed sleeves, pintucks and a pink ribbon at the neck. The skirt is long, gathered into a high waistband laced with two ribbons like a corset, with a scalloped hem and cream lace showing beneath. White, orange, pink and lace.

It is the warmest of the laced-skirt sets and the one with the most unexpected colour, because orange is a colour most wardrobes avoid, and on a long skirt with lace it works better than it has any right to.

The name, Kakiiro, is persimmon colour, which is what the skirt is, and the name says so.

The lace is a separate layer sewn into the skirt. The cloth is a polyester-cotton blend, light in the blouse and fuller in the skirt. Both wash cold and hang, and the orange keeps its depth out of the sun.

Wear the blouse tucked into the laced waistband with the bow at the neck, and white trainers, or brown shoes when the leaves match the skirt. It is the set for the month the fruit is on the tree.

From across a street it is white over a long orange skirt with cream at the hem. From close the pink bow and the orange skirt sit together the way a persimmon sits against its own leaf, and the lacing runs through eyelets.

It goes with a brown cardigan, a cream bag and a walk under trees. It is the laced set to choose when every other colour has been chosen already.

The waistband is wide and lightly boned at the front, so the lacing pulls it in without folding, and the two ribbons tie in a bow over the blouse. The blouse buttons behind the pintucks. The lace at the hem is cream and cut longer than the scallops, so it always shows against the orange.

The orange in this cloth is a burnt one, with brown in it, not a bright one, and it reads as a warm neutral from a distance. It is the colour the Japanese have named after the fruit for a thousand years, and the fruit is the right reference.

Sizes run from S to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese dress

Are these traditional Japanese dresses?

They are Japanese street style: kimono-cut tops over long skirts, the laced skirts and rounded collars of Harajuku, a sailor collar, a hakama-shaped skirt. Real garments, cut for a wardrobe rather than a ceremony, and every page says which.

Are the sets sold together?

Yes. A two-piece set is the top and the skirt, and the price is for both. Each half works on its own, and the pages say how.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

Polyester-cotton blends, lighter in the tops and fuller in the skirts, with a knit-feel blend on the two winter dresses. Each page says which. Never silk, and never sold as it.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold with similar colours, dark skirts inside out, and hang to dry. Lace and eyelet on a gentle cycle. Iron on low if a collar needs it.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
