Fabric & care

About this piece
Pink crinkle cotton pyjamas with a knot button at the shoulder and white embroidered cuffs
These pyjamas are cut the way the house clothes of a Japanese inn are cut: a round-necked top that closes with a single knot button at the shoulder rather than down the front, long sleeves, and straight trousers, in a pale pink crinkled cotton that stands off the skin and breathes. The cuffs and the ankle bands are white, and each carries a small scroll embroidered in dark thread, the one decoration on the set.
The knot button is the detail. It is a cord knot through a loop, the closure Chinese and Japanese tailors used before buttons, and it sits at the shoulder so the neck lies flat and nothing presses on the chest while you sleep.
The name, Onsen, is the hot spring, and the set is what you wear back to the room from one: soft, loose, clean, and in a colour that goes with a wooden corridor.
The scroll is embroidered, not printed, in a stitch you can feel with a fingertip. The crinkle is in the finish of the cotton, so it never needs ironing and comes back after every wash. The cloth is light enough for summer and, with the long sleeves, warm enough for the first cold nights.
The trousers are straight, with a soft band at the waist, and the white bands at the ankle match the cuffs, so the set reads as a set from across a room and as a pair of details from close. Wear it to sleep in, to breakfast, and to answer the door.
Up close the crinkle shows its pucker and the embroidery shows its stitches. From across a bedroom it is a pale pink two-piece with white edges, and it looks like it belongs to someone who is about to sleep well.
Wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own and there is nothing to iron. The set at the end of the winter is softer than the set at the start, which is how loungewear should age.
It goes with bare feet, a cup of something, and a book. Of the pyjama sets in the range, this is the one closest to what a ryokan would give you, in the colour they would not.

What is a jinbei?
The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it cotton?
The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.
