About this piece

Noh mask of a young woman's face, white with red lips and a calm expression

The calm face of the Noh stage. This mask is the young woman, the ko-omote, in a smooth white finish with high painted brows set well above the eyes, narrow dark eyes cut open, a small nose, full cheeks and red painted lips over a line of white teeth, with the expression that is neither a smile nor not one. It fastens with an elastic strap and it is the quietest object in the collection.

It is the mask that changes with the angle: tilted down it is sad, tilted up it is glad, and straight on it is waiting. That is what the Noh mask is for, and this one does it.

The name, Koomote, is the small face, the Noh name for the mask of the young woman, and the mask is that one.

The mask is moulded and finished smooth in a soft white, with the brows, eyes, lips and teeth painted by hand and the eyes cut open behind the painted line, and the inside plain. It fastens with an elastic strap. The shape is the oval of the stage mask, narrower than a face, which is why the wearer's own cheeks show at the sides, as they do on the stage.

Wear it strapped for a photograph, a performance or a party, and tilt the head, because that is where the mask lives; or hang it, which is where most of them go, on a wall where the light comes from one side and the expression changes through the day.

The brows are the detail: painted high on the forehead, well above the eyes, in the manner of the court women of the old paintings, and they are what tell you the face is from another century. The lips are painted red over a line of white teeth, which is the other tell.

Hung on a wall it is a face in the room, and that is how most of them end up: on a nail by the door, over a desk, in a hallway where a guest meets it first. It is photographed at the same scale as every mask in the collection, so the pages compare.

Wipe with a soft dry cloth; the white shows marks and wipes clean. Keep it out of direct sun.

From across a room it is a white face with red lips. From close the brows show their height, the eyes their cut, and the teeth their line. It is the mask for a person who wants the stage and its stillness.

One size, adult. The mask is the oval of the stage mask, a little narrower than a face, and the strap adjusts.

Questions about the japanese masks

Which masks can be worn and which are for the wall?

The hannya, fox, cat, tengu, hyottoko, Noh, samurai half masks, the ninja mask and the armoured mask all have straps and are worn. The six unpainted wooden masks are carved to hang; they have cord holes, not straps.

What are they made of?

Hannya: painted resin. Fox and cat: hand-painted PVC. Samurai half masks: painted latex. Wooden masks: a single block of pale wood, unpainted. The others are moulded and painted. The fabric line on each page says which.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

What size are they?

One size, adult; the fox and hyottoko masks fit a teenager too. Straps adjust. The large wooden folk mask is bigger than a face; every mask is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.

What is the difference between a hannya and an oni?

A hannya is the Noh mask of a woman turned demon by jealousy, with horns, gold eyes and a mouth that does not close; its colour, red, green or blue, marks how far she has gone. An oni is the mountain demon of folklore, and the wooden one here is that.

How do I look after them?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Keep resin, PVC and latex out of a hot car and direct sun. Dust the wooden masks with a brush and keep them away from radiators and damp.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
