About this piece
One muted grey-blue, a fine texture in the weave, and a burgundy obi
This is the kimono with nothing on it. One colour, a muted grey-blue between charcoal and navy, in a cloth with a fine tone-on-tone texture that keeps the surface from ever reading flat. No stripe, no print, no contrast at the collar. The one note of colour is the obi, a deep burgundy with a small check in the weave, and against the grey-blue it reads like a single line of ink.
It is the most versatile piece in the collection because it competes with nothing. It takes any obi. It sits under any jacket. It goes to bed and it goes to dinner, and it looks like the same garment doing both.
The name, Ainezu, is an old colour name, indigo greyed with mouse, the traditional word for exactly this shade: a blue that has decided not to be bright. It is the colour of the cloth, described rather than sold.
The weave is polyester with a dry, slightly brushed hand and a fine texture, chosen because a solid colour this even must stay even through washing, and because a kimono worn in the warm months should hang light. It is not lined.
The obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the burgundy obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. On a plain cloth the obi is the whole composition, so tie it neatly and set it a little low, which is where a man's obi sits.
The cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to move. Worn at home it is a robe that looks like a decision. Worn out with sandals it is a summer outfit that reads calm from across the street and considered from across a table. Wear it with nothing patterned, because it is the piece for people who do not want a pattern. Black sandals, and a white tee underneath if the evening cools.
At three metres it is a dark robe with a red belt. At thirty centimetres the weave shows its texture, a fine grain running through the colour, and the burgundy obi shows its check. That is all there is to see, and it is enough.
Sizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the kimono
Is it a kimono or a yukata?
Both are the same shape: a long robe crossed left over right and tied with an obi. A yukata is the unlined summer version in a light woven cloth; the satin pieces here are printed kimono robes. Every page says which it is, and the obi is included with each.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Men's yukata are sized by height; between two sizes, take the larger. Women's kimono are one size, with a wrap front that adjusts at the obi. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every piece in this collection is polyester, woven for the yukata and satin for the printed kimono, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the back or the hip. At home it is a robe; out, with sandals, it is the whole outfit. A plain T-shirt underneath if the evening cools.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle for the satin pieces. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
What we sell, and what we don't
