About this piece
A crisp pale pinstripe on near-black, the yukata that dresses like a suit
A pinstripe does the same job on a yukata that it does on a suit: it draws a long vertical line and makes the wearer look taller and more decided. This one runs fine pale stripes, evenly spaced, down a ground so dark a blue it reads black in most light. The stripes are crisp rather than blurred, which is the difference between this yukata and the black one with the whispered stripe: this one wants to be seen. The obi is grey, striped, wide and flat, and it cuts the vertical cleanly at the waist.
It is the everyday piece of the collection, the one to wear most often, because a pinstripe is a pattern that never dates and never shouts. It looks right in the morning and better in the evening.
The name, Tatejima, simply means vertical stripe, the oldest everyday pattern in Japanese cloth, worn by shopkeepers and townsmen for three centuries because it was cheap to weave and looked sharp. It still does.
The weave is polyester with a dry, slightly textured hand, chosen because a stripe must stay straight and a near-black must stay near-black through washing, and because a yukata is for the warm months and should hang light. The stripe is woven, not printed, so it sits in the cloth rather than on it.
The obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. The stripes on the obi run across, the stripes on the cloth run down, and the two meet at the waist the way they should.
The cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to walk. Worn at home it is a robe with a spine. Worn out with dark sandals it is a summer outfit that looks tailored without a single seam of tailoring in it.
At three metres the stripes read as a fine grey texture on black. At thirty centimetres they are lines, evenly spaced and straight, running unbroken from the collar to the hem. The obi across them is the only horizontal on the garment, and it is where the eye stops.
Sizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the kimono
Is it a kimono or a yukata?
Both are the same shape: a long robe crossed left over right and tied with an obi. A yukata is the unlined summer version in a light woven cloth; the satin pieces here are printed kimono robes. Every page says which it is, and the obi is included with each.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Men's yukata are sized by height; between two sizes, take the larger. Women's kimono are one size, with a wrap front that adjusts at the obi. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every piece in this collection is polyester, woven for the yukata and satin for the printed kimono, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the back or the hip. At home it is a robe; out, with sandals, it is the whole outfit. A plain T-shirt underneath if the evening cools.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle for the satin pieces. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
