Fabric & care
The composition is stated in the description and printed on the inner label. Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over prints or embroidery.

About this piece
Navy crinkle gauze with a white-dotted trim at the collar, cuffs and pocket
Small white dots on navy is the oldest pattern on a Japanese hand towel, and on this jinbei set it is the trim. The collar band, the cuffs and the patch pocket are cut in it, rows of tiny white dots on dark blue, and the rest of the top and the trousers are a plain navy crinkled cotton gauze. From a distance the dots read as a pale edge on a dark garment. From close they are dots, and they are cheerful.
It is the version of the navy jinbei with a wink in it, and the wink is traditional: this dot pattern has been tied round the heads of festival carriers and sushi chefs for two hundred years, and a jinbei with it at the collar is dressed for the same evening.
The name, Mameshibori, is that pattern, bean dots, the tie-dyed towel pattern where each dot is the size of a soybean. Here it is woven into the trim rather than tied and dyed, and we would rather say so.
The gauze is cotton, crinkled in the finish rather than by ironing, so it never needs pressing and goes back to its texture after every wash. The trim is a flat cloth, so it sits crisp against the puckered body and holds the collar's shape.
Wear the top crossed left over right and knot the tie at the hip; the trousers sit at the waist on a soft band. At home it is the navy set with something to look at. Out, with sandals, it is a summer outfit that reads festival rather than sofa, and it is what to wear to one.
Up close the dots line up in their rows and the crinkle of the body shows its pucker against the flat trim. From across a street it is a navy two-piece with a pale edge at the collar and the cuffs.
It goes with navy, white, indigo and bare feet. If you own the plain navy already, this is the second navy, the one for the evening out.
The trousers are plain navy, cut loose with a soft band at the waist, so the dots stay on the top where they belong. Wash the set cold and hang it; the trim holds its white through the summer and the navy holds its blue.

What is a jinbei?
The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.
Does it run small?

Is it cotton?
The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.
