About this piece
Red-and-white koi through white water on black, with a red obi to match the fish
The koi on this yukata are the red-and-white kind, the most prized of all the carp, and they swim through white water across the whole cloth. Waves curl in cream and white line over a black ground, foam breaks at the crests, and between the waves the fish turn, white bodies patched with red, scales drawn one by one, from the shoulder to the hem and across both sleeves. The obi is red, wide and flat, and it matches the patches on the fish.
It is the most decorated piece in the men's range and the most traditional in its subject, because carp and water have been on Japanese cloth for as long as there has been Japanese cloth. The red is what lifts it: without it the print would be black and white and handsome; with it, the fish are alive.
The name, Kohaku, is the name of this exact koi variety, white with red, the first one any collector buys and the one the others are judged against.
It is printed, not woven or embroidered, with the white kept crisp against the black and the red kept flat and clean. The cloth is polyester with a dry hand and a slight texture, chosen because black must stay black around white line work, and because a yukata for the warm months should hang light.
The obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the red obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. On this print the red obi is not a contrast but a continuation, and it is the right one.
The cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to walk. Worn at home it is a robe with a pond on it. Worn out with black sandals it is the summer outfit for a festival night, which is where a koi yukata belongs, and it needs nothing added.
At three metres it is a black robe with white water on it. At thirty centimetres the koi show their scales and their whiskers, the foam shows its curls, and the red patches show their edges. It is a print drawn to be read in a crowd, at a festival, under lanterns.
Sizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the kimono
Is it a kimono or a yukata?
Both are the same shape: a long robe crossed left over right and tied with an obi. A yukata is the unlined summer version in a light woven cloth; the satin pieces here are printed kimono robes. Every page says which it is, and the obi is included with each.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Men's yukata are sized by height; between two sizes, take the larger. Women's kimono are one size, with a wrap front that adjusts at the obi. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every piece in this collection is polyester, woven for the yukata and satin for the printed kimono, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the back or the hip. At home it is a robe; out, with sandals, it is the whole outfit. A plain T-shirt underneath if the evening cools.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle for the satin pieces. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
