About this piece
White stripes and pale circles on bright blue, like light on water, tied in brown
The blue on this yukata is brighter than the others, a clear mid-blue rather than a navy, and the print on it is water. Fine white stripes run down the cloth in bands, some close and some spaced, and across them float pale blue circles of different sizes, some the size of a coin, some the size of a plate, transparent enough that the stripes show through them. Bubbles, or moons on a river, or the rings a drop makes. The obi is brown, wide and flat, and against the blue it is a jetty.
It is the freshest piece in the men's range and the most summery, because the blue is the blue of a swimming pool and the circles are the only round things in a collection of stripes. It looks cool, in both senses, and it looks best in sun.
The name, Minamo, is the surface of the water, the word for the top of a pond or a river where the light lands, and the print is that surface drawn in two colours.
It is printed, not woven, with the circles kept translucent so the stripes run through them. The cloth is polyester with a dry hand and a slight texture, chosen because a blue this bright must stay bright through washing and the white must stay white, and because a summer yukata should weigh nothing.
The obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the brown obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. Brown against bright blue is a warm, slightly old-fashioned pairing, and it is the one that stops the outfit looking like sportswear.
At three metres it is a striped blue robe. At thirty centimetres the circles appear, the stripes show through them, and the two patterns overlap without either one winning. It is built for the second look and for the light.
The cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to walk. Worn at home it is a robe for a hot morning. Worn out with pale sandals it is the summer outfit of the men's range, and it goes with white, cream and any blue lighter than itself.
Sizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the kimono
Is it a kimono or a yukata?
Both are the same shape: a long robe crossed left over right and tied with an obi. A yukata is the unlined summer version in a light woven cloth; the satin pieces here are printed kimono robes. Every page says which it is, and the obi is included with each.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Men's yukata are sized by height; between two sizes, take the larger. Women's kimono are one size, with a wrap front that adjusts at the obi. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Every piece in this collection is polyester, woven for the yukata and satin for the printed kimono, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the back or the hip. At home it is a robe; out, with sandals, it is the whole outfit. A plain T-shirt underneath if the evening cools.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle for the satin pieces. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.
What we sell, and what we don't
