About this piece

Brick red with nothing on it, held shut by two cords and two ring buttons

Bold colour usually arrives with a print attached. This jacket leaves the print at home. It is a single brick red, the red of old roof tiles rather than of fire engines, in a slubbed weave that gives the surface a little life without adding a pattern. Two patch pockets sit at the hip. Two cords hang from the chest and can be knotted. Above them, a pair of small ring buttons closes the front if you want it closed. The sleeves are wide, stop at the elbow, and turn back with a short cuff.

The colour is the whole event, and it has been chosen carefully. Benigara is the name of the iron-oxide pigment that Japanese builders have used on temple gates and merchant houses for centuries, a red with brown in it that looks better weathered than fresh. On cloth it reads warm and slightly dusty, and it sits next to white and black without arguing with either.

The cloth is a polyester weave with a dry, textured hand that shows the slubs in the light, chosen because a solid colour this strong needs to stay even after washing, and because a summer layer should weigh almost nothing. It creases a little at the elbow, which on this weave looks like character rather than neglect.

The cut is a short open kimono jacket, and the closures give it three ways to wear. Fully open, it hangs like a cardigan with the cords swinging. Tied at the chest, it pulls the two fronts together over the tee and gives the shoulders a squarer line. Buttoned and tied, it becomes a short jacket that stays put in a wind, which is more than most of this collection can offer.

Worn over a white tee, the red frames a clean column and looks like a decision. Over black, it deepens and reads closer to burgundy. It goes with black trousers, with dark denim, with grey, and it is the one solid in the range that will get you noticed from across a room without a single motif to explain.

The two ring buttons are small and dark, sitting just above the cords, and they are easy to miss in the photograph. They matter on a windy day. Most open jackets in this collection rely on the wearer's hands to hold them; this one can be shut and left alone.

Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the kimono jacket

Is a kimono jacket the same as a haori?

No. A haori has a collar band folded back on itself and is worn open over a kimono. A kimono jacket has a plain faced edge, closes with a single toggle or tie, and is cut to sit over a T-shirt.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Each piece is cotton, linen or polyester, as stated in its description and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers. Elbow-length sleeves make it a spring and autumn layer; long sleeves carry into winter over a knit.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print or embroidery.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
