About this piece
Light-wash denim joggers with a ribbed ankle, a red zip and a patch
Denim cut like a jogger is the most comfortable thing denim has ever done, and these are the proof. Light-wash blue, faded at the thighs, with a soft drawstring waist, a ribbed cuff at the ankle, a zipped pocket on the right thigh with a red zip, and a small woven patch over a cargo pocket on the left. The rest is a five-pocket jean above the knee and a jogger below it.
It is the denim pair of the collection for someone who does not want to sit in a pair of jeans all day, and the pale wash keeps it summer.
The name, Usuai, is pale indigo, the blue of the wash, and the trousers are that colour with a red zip on it.
The cut is a jogger: a soft waistband with a drawstring, room through the thigh, a taper to the knee and a ribbed cuff at the ankle that sits on the trainer. It is the shape Tokyo wears to the convenience store and to the club, and it does both. The cloth is denim, washed so the colour has already moved at the seams, chosen because denim gets better with the years and a jogger cut in it is the most comfortable thing denim has ever been asked to do. The cuff is a ribbed knit sewn to the denim, and it holds.
Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a haori or a sukajan over the top when it turns, and nothing else with a pattern below the waist.
They wash cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang; the pale blue keeps fading at the thighs, which is where it should.
From across a street they are pale denim joggers. From close the wash shows its fade, the zip its red, the patch its weave, and the cuff its rib. They are the pair for a long day that starts on a train.
The patch on the thigh is woven and small, the mark of the design rather than a brand you would know, and the cargo pocket beneath it is real. The waist is a flat elastic under the drawstring with two cords ending in white tips.
Sizes run from S to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese pants
What kind of trousers are these?
Japanese street trousers: cargos, joggers, wide legs and the tobi and harem cuts of the building site and the temple town, several embroidered with cranes, dragons and clouds. Every page says the cut, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers, which is how they are worn.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
Mostly light polyester-cotton blends, with denim for the two denim pairs, a linen-look cotton blend for the embroidered ones, corduroy blends for the patchwork and the workwear pair, and a heat-set pleated polyester for the pleated trousers. Each page says which.
Embroidered or printed?
Each page says. The cranes, the characters and the clouds are embroidered; the dragons and the camouflage are printed; the kimono and dragon panels are printed cloth sewn in.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry; denim with its own colour the first time. Nothing needs ironing, and the pleated pair must not be.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
