About this piece

Round floor cushion woven from rush in a coil, pale or dark, 30 cm

A coil of straw to sit on. This round cushion is woven from rush in a tight spiral from the centre out, flat and firm, a few centimetres thick, in a pale natural straw or a darker one toasted brown, and it is the seat of the tea room and the temple, the mat you are given at the door. It smells faintly of hay when it is new and of nothing after a month.

It is the plainest seat in the collection and the most Japanese, and it is the one under the low table.

The name, Igusa, is the rush, the plant tatami is woven from, and the cushion is that plant in a circle.

The cushion is rush straw coiled from a centre and bound through with a fine cord, so the top shows the spiral and the edge shows the rows, with a woven binding round the rim. It is firm, it does not compress, and it is light enough to carry in one hand.

Sit on it cross-legged or kneeling at a low table, or use it as a mat for a teapot, a plant or a lamp, which is what most of them end up as. It stacks, it hangs on a nail, and it lives by the door for the garden.

The spiral is the detail: the coil runs from a tight centre to the rim in one continuous rope, and the binding cord is what holds it, visible as a fine stitch across the rows. The dark version is the same straw toasted.

Japan sits on the floor, and the cushion is the chair. On tatami or on boards it goes under a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed; in a Western room it goes on a sofa, a chair or a floor by the fire, and it is the thing a guest is handed. Every cushion in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Keep it dry; brush it with a soft brush and air it in the sun once a season. Wet straw marks and goes soft.

From across a room it is a straw disc on the floor. From close the disc shows its spiral, the rows their binding, and the rim its weave. It is the cushion for a tea table and a person who likes the material.

30 by 30 cm, a seat for one, a few centimetres thick. It is small by Western standards and it is meant to be: it goes under a person, not round one.

Questions about the japanese cushions

What is a zabuton?

The flat floor cushion of a Japanese room: the seat at a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed. The round ones here are zabuton; the straw ones are the tea-room and temple versions; the plush ones are the same idea with a face.

What are they made of?

The straw cushions are coiled rush or straw, bound with cord. The cloth cushions have a cotton-mix cover, printed or napped, over a firm synthetic wadding. The plush ones are a short-pile plush over a soft fill. The fabric line on each page says which.

How big are they?

The rush cushion is 30 cm; the printed zabuton comes in 43, 49 or 59 cm; the others are the round of a seat, and the hamster is a child's chair. Every cushion is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Can I use them on a chair?

Yes. The square wave cushion is made for one; the round ones sit on a chair, a bench or a window seat as well as the floor. The straw ones are for the floor, a stool or a teapot.

How do I wash them?

Cloth and plush cushions: machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, dry flat, reshape when damp. Straw: keep dry, brush, air in the sun. The hamster is spot clean.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
