About this piece

Grey with black stripes and a dragon drawn faintly in the weave, tied in black

The dragon on this yukata does not want to be seen at once. Black vertical stripes run down a mid-grey ground, some thin, some wide, unevenly spaced, and between them a dragon is drawn in faint black ink, coiling through the stripes with its scales and whiskers barely a shade darker than the grey, so it appears only when the eye has stopped on the cloth. From a distance it is a striped robe. From a metre away it has a beast in it. The obi is black, wide and flat.

It is the most discreet dragon in the collection and the most Japanese in its manners, because hiding the picture inside the pattern is exactly what the old kimono-makers did when the laws forbade them to show off. The stripe is the disguise. The dragon is the joke.

The name, Ryumon, is the dragon gate, the waterfall of the legend that a carp climbs to become a dragon, and the word also means a stripe. The print is both at once.

It is printed, not woven, with the stripes kept sharp and the dragon kept faint on purpose. The cloth is polyester with a dry hand and a slight texture, chosen because a grey this mid must hold a black stripe and a near-invisible drawing at the same time through washing, and because a yukata should hang light.

The obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the black obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. The obi picks up the widest stripe on the cloth and reads as one more.

At three metres it is a grey-and-black striped robe. At thirty centimetres the dragon shows its scales, its claws and its whiskers, drawn in a single tone of ink. It is the print in the collection built most deliberately for the second look.

The cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to walk. Worn at home it is a robe with a secret in it. Worn out with black sandals it is a summer outfit that reads sharp from the street and rewards the person who sits next to you.

Sizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the kimono

Is it a kimono or a yukata?

Both are the same shape: a long robe crossed left over right and tied with an obi. A yukata is the unlined summer version in a light woven cloth; the satin pieces here are printed kimono robes. Every page says which it is, and the obi is included with each.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Men's yukata are sized by height; between two sizes, take the larger. Women's kimono are one size, with a wrap front that adjusts at the obi. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Every piece in this collection is polyester, woven for the yukata and satin for the printed kimono, as stated on its page and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Cross the left front over the right, wrap the obi twice at the waist and knot it at the back or the hip. At home it is a robe; out, with sandals, it is the whole outfit. A plain T-shirt underneath if the evening cools.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours, on a gentle cycle for the satin pieces. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
