About this piece
Sage green in a smooth cotton weave, a wrap top tied at the side
Sage green in a flat cotton is the colour of a garden seen through a window, and this pyjama set is cut from it: a wrap top that crosses and ties at the side, sleeves that stop below the elbow, and straight trousers with a soft band at the waist. Nothing is printed, embroidered or trimmed. The colour and the cut are the whole design.
It is the plain wrap set in the colour that goes with the most rooms, because sage sits between grey and green and reads as neither. It is the colour of a bathroom with a plant in it, and of the person who waters it. It is also the one that looks most like clothes on a body that has just got up. It looks like the morning went well.
The name, Wakakusa, means young grass, the green of a lawn in April, and it is the traditional name for this soft green.
The weave is cotton, smooth rather than crinkled, with a dry hand that takes an iron or goes without. It is light, it breathes, and it dries in an hour on a line. The weave is fine enough to read as smooth and open enough to breathe, which is the balance a summer cloth needs.
Cross the fronts left over right and knot the tie at the hip; the trousers sit at the waist. Sleep in it, live in it, and wear the top over a vest as a light shirt in summer, which it does without looking like nightwear.
Up close the weave shows its fine grain and the tie shows its knot. From across a bedroom it is a green two-piece with a tie at the hip, and it looks like it belongs to someone with plants.
Wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the green stays even and the cotton softens. There is nothing that needs ironing, and nothing that minds it. It is a forgiving cloth.
It goes with bare feet, cream sheets, and a cup of green tea, which is not a joke. Of the smooth-weave wrap sets, this is the green one, and it is the one that goes to the garden. Take it there.
Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the jinbei
What is a jinbei?
The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it cotton?
The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.
What we sell, and what we don't
