About this piece
A single red rose embroidered on a striped shirt, a thorned stem across the chest
One rose. It is embroidered in red on the left chest of this shirt, with a long stem crossing the placket, thorns along it, two grey-green leaves and a bud, and a small script in brown beneath. The shirt is striped, a fine tonal stripe in beige or in black, with a point collar, a button front, short sleeves and a boxy body. The rose is the only colour on it.
It is the most restrained of the embroidered shirts and the most romantic, because one rose says more than a garden, and the stem crossing the buttons is a good idea.
The name, Hamanasu, is the beach rose, the wild rose of the northern Japanese coast, and the flower on the shirt is drawn from it.
The rose is embroidered, not printed, in satin stitch with the thorns in a single thread. The cut is a boxy short-sleeved shirt with a point collar and a straight hem, room through the body. The cloth is a striped polyester-cotton blend with a soft, dry hand, chosen because a fine stripe must stay straight through washing and a shirt this quiet should feel good. It washes cold, inside out, and hangs.
Wear it buttoned with white trousers, as in the photograph, or open over a white tee. Beige goes with everything; black goes with black. Plain shoes.
From across a street it is a striped shirt with a red mark on the chest. From close the rose has every petal, the stem every thorn, the leaves their veins, and the script its letters. It is the shirt for the person who wants one thing embroidered, and wants it to be this.
The stripe is a fine tonal one, cream on beige or grey on black, so from a distance the shirt reads as plain and from close as striped, which is the right order for a shirt with one flower on it. The script beneath the rose is small and embroidered in brown.
It is cut short and wide, so it hangs like a jacket and layers over a tee without pulling. The collar is a point collar and the buttons are the colour of the cloth.
Wash it cold, inside out, and hang it; the rose keeps its red and the stripe stays straight.
Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the japanese shirts
What kind of shirts are these?
Short-sleeved camp shirts and boxy button-ups in the Japanese street style: open collars, straight hems to wear untucked, and prints or embroidery that cover the whole shirt. A tartan, a work shirt and a football jersey sit alongside them, and every page says which.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Several shirts are one size, cut boxy, and their pages say so.
Printed or embroidered?
Each page says. Most are printed edge to edge; the goose and the rose shirts are embroidered, and the stitches stand off the cloth.
What is it made of?
Polyester-cotton blends, with a washed cotton blend for the work shirt and a polyester kit cloth for the jersey. Never silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, and hang to dry. Nothing needs ironing; a cool iron on the back of the collar if you like it sharp.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
