About this piece
A silver phoenix through a gold crescent moon and blossom, on a black flight jacket
The phoenix on the back of this bomber is embroidered in silver on matte black, rising with its tail feathers trailing to the hem through a thin gold crescent moon and a scatter of cherry blossom in pink and white, with a small red seal embroidered at the hip. On the left chest, the same bird small, with its own crescent. The jacket is a flight jacket: matte black nylon, black ribbing, a metal zip, a zipped pocket on the left sleeve.
It is the phoenix in the range for someone who does not want satin, and the matte black makes the silver bird read like a drawing in metal.
The name, Getsuei, is the moon's shadow, the light of the moon on a dark surface, and the silver bird on black is that light.
The bird is embroidered, not printed, in silver satin stitch with the moon in a single gold line and the blossom in two pinks. The body is a matte nylon blend with a light quilted lining, the cloth of a flight jacket rather than a souvenir one, with ribbed knit at the collar, cuffs and hem, a metal zip, a slash pocket at each hip and a zipped pocket on the left sleeve. It washes cold, inside out, and dries flat.
Wear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black with black jeans and white trainers. It goes with grey, with silver, and with nothing else patterned.
From across a street it is a black bomber with a pale bird on the back. From close the phoenix has every feather in silver, the moon its gold, the blossom every petal, and the seal its characters. It is the last sukajan in the collection and the one that closes it quietly: black, silver, one bird, one moon.
A flight jacket differs from a satin sukajan in the cloth and the collar: the nylon is matte and takes the weather, and the ribbing is plain and closes at the neck. It is cut a little slimmer, so a knit goes under it in the cold.
The small phoenix on the chest carries its own crescent, and the seal at the hip of the back is embroidered in red with two characters; it is the mark the design carries. The ribbing is plain black, and the silver is the only light on the jacket until the moon.
Sizes run from S to 3XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the sukajan jacket
What is a sukajan?
The Japanese souvenir jacket: a satin bomber with a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, embroidered on the back and chest with dragons, tigers, koi, cranes and gods, first sewn in Yokosuka for American sailors after the war. Ours keep the cut and the embroidery; a few are the same idea on a flight jacket, a denim jacket or a velvet-look cloth, and their pages say so.
Is the embroidery real?
Yes. Every motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch. That is why the jackets weigh what they do and why the back catches the light.
Is it reversible?
No. None of our sukajan is reversible. The lining is a lining.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
What is it made of?
A satin blend for the classic sukajan, a matte nylon blend for the flight-jacket versions, washed denim for the one denim jacket, and a velvet-look or leather-look synthetic where the page says so. Never silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wash it?
Cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dry flat; never tumble an embroidered jacket. The leather-look jacket is wiped, not washed.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
