About this piece

Silver band with a gold winged lion, lettered in kanji or hiragana

A small gold beast on a silver band. This ring is a silver band carved round with cloud scrolls and a lettered border, with a small winged lion in gold set at the front, and a text engraved inside the band. It comes in two versions that differ in the lettering, one in kanji and one in hiragana, and the beast is the same on both.

It is the ring in the collection with the most detail at the smallest scale, and the gold lion is about the size of a grain of rice.

The name, Hisho, is flight, the lion's wings, and the beast is the winged guardian that sits at the gates of temples and treasuries across East Asia.

The band is sterling silver, stamped 925 inside the band, about 8 mm wide, carved in relief and darkened in the recesses, with the lion cast separately in a gold-toned finish and set into the front. The band is open and springs a little.

Wear it on the middle or ring finger of either hand, on its own or next to the cloud band in the collection, which it shares a pattern with. It goes with anything.

The lettering round the band is the detail that decides the version: the kanji version carries characters, the hiragana version carries the phonetic script, and both say the same thing. The text inside is a short protective phrase.

From across a table it is a silver band with a gold dot. From close the dot is a lion with wings, the band shows its clouds and its letters, and the inside its text. It is the ring for a person who wants a guardian and wants it small.

Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.

Silver darkens with time and skin, and this ring is meant to: the recesses are already blackened so the relief reads, and the high points polish themselves against your hand. Wipe with a soft cloth; a silver cloth brings the shine back when you want it. Take it off for the sea and the shower.

The band is open at the back and springs a little, so one size fits most hands: slide it on and it settles. It can be eased wider or narrower by hand once to set it.

Questions about the japanese rings

What is a Japanese ring?

A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.

How do I find my size?

Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.

Are they silver or steel?

Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Will the dark finish wear off?

The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.

How do I care for them?

Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
