About this piece

A dragon painted in blue ink, dissolving into the cloth as it moves

Where most dragons are drawn, this one is painted. The body is a wash of navy and black ink over a pale ground, the head comes up across the back with its antlers reaching for the collar, and the edges of the creature blur into blue mist the way ink does when the brush is wet. Nothing is outlined. The dragon appears where the ink is dense and disappears where it thins, and the effect is of something moving through water rather than sitting on a jacket.

The front carries the tail end of it. Dark strokes sweep down both panels and along the sleeves, with the pale ground showing through in patches, and the lower left goes almost white where the wash runs out. It means the front reads as an abstract in blue and cream until you see the back, at which point the abstract turns out to have a face.

It is printed, not embroidered, and the printing does what a brush would: soft where the ink is soft, sharp on the antlers and the eye. The cloth is polyester, and here that matters more than usual, because a wash this delicate would go grey on a cotton after ten washes. It is light enough for summer and holds its shape.

The cut is a short open kimono jacket with a flat edge down both fronts, no fastening, wide elbow-length sleeves and a hem at the hip. Worn open over a white tee, the white joins the pale ground and the dragon seems to swim around you. Over navy, the print's dark strokes link up with the tee and the pale patches become the picture.

Wear it with white, cream or navy below, and keep everything else quiet. This is a painterly piece, and painterly pieces lose their nerve next to a logo. If you want a dragon but not the roar, this is the one.

The name, Sumi-e, is the Japanese term for ink-wash painting, the discipline of saying the most with the least ink, and the print honours it: the antlers are a few confident strokes, the mist is a single dilute wash, and there is more pale ground on the jacket than there is dragon. If you have ever liked a brush painting for the parts the brush did not touch, this is that idea, worn.

Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the kimono jacket

Is a kimono jacket the same as a haori?

No. A haori has a collar band folded back on itself and is worn open over a kimono. A kimono jacket has a plain faced edge, closes with a single toggle or tie, and is cut to sit over a T-shirt.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it silk?

No. Each piece is cotton, linen or polyester, as stated in its description and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers. Elbow-length sleeves make it a spring and autumn layer; long sleeves carry into winter over a knit.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print or embroidery.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
