About this piece

White cranes with pink wings on a long silver-grey satin robe, gold blossom above

The long version of the crane robe reaches the ankle, and the cranes have room to fly. On this one the ground is a silver grey satin that reads pewter in shadow and almost white in light, the birds cross the lower half of the robe in white with pink wings and red crowns, and above them, over the chest and sleeves, small sprays of gold blossom scatter on the grey. The belt is cut from the same cloth and ties at the front. Wide sleeves to the elbow, a crossover front, and a hem that moves when you walk.

It is the softest of the long satin robes and the one for a morning that is not in a hurry. Grey does not compete with the pink of the wings, and the gold blossom above catches the light like jewellery.

The name, Tsurugin, means silver crane, the bird on a silver ground, and it is the colour the robe is.

The cranes are printed, not embroidered, on a polyester satin with a smooth, glossy face and a fluid drape, chosen because satin is what gives grey its silver, and because a long robe should fall straight rather than stand. It is unlined and not sheer.

Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the belt once at the waist and tie it at the front or the side. The length means the robe swings, and the elbow sleeves mean it stays out of the sink and the coffee.

Up close the cranes show every feather and the blossom shows its gold. From across a room it is a long silver robe with pale birds at the hem, and it is the one of the family that photographs like a hotel corridor.

It washes cold, inside out, and dries in an hour on a hanger. Kept on the back of the door rather than folded in a drawer, the satin stays smooth and the print stays where it was put.

It goes with nothing, with a white slip when the room is cool, and with bare feet always. Of the long crane robes, this is the calm one, and the one to give to someone who says they do not wear colour.

Sizes run from M to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the jinbei

What is a jinbei?

The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it cotton?

The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.
