About this piece

Square tufted chair cushion in a patchwork of blue wave prints, in three patterns

A square of blue prints, tufted like a mattress. This chair cushion is a padded square with its cover pieced from blue and white Japanese prints, the overlapping-wave scales, stripes and flowing water, tufted in a grid so the padding stays where it is, in three patchwork patterns: one with the prints in a diagonal quilt, one in a checkerboard, one in a single scale print. It is the cushion for a dining chair, a bench or a floor.

It is the one square cushion in the collection, and the patchwork is what makes it Japanese rather than a chair pad.

The name, Namiza, is the wave seat, and the prints on it are the wave in three drawings.

The cushion is a padded square with a pieced cover in printed cloth, tufted through at a grid of points so it stays flat and does not bunch, with a piped edge. The fill is a firm synthetic wadding.

Put it on a dining chair, a kitchen bench or a stool, or on the floor at a low table; it is thin enough for a chair and firm enough for a floor. Tied or untied, it stays put because it is square.

The tufting is the detail: a grid of stitched points across the square that pulls the cover into a quilt, so the prints dip at each point and the cushion reads as a mattress in miniature. The piping round the edge is in a plain blue.

Japan sits on the floor, and the cushion is the chair. On tatami or on boards it goes under a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed; in a Western room it goes on a sofa, a chair or a floor by the fire, and it is the thing a guest is handed. Every cushion in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Machine wash cool on a gentle cycle and dry flat; the tufting keeps the fill in place through a wash. Iron on low if it needs it.

From across a room it is a blue square on a chair. From close the square shows its prints, the tufting its dips, and the piping its edge. It is the cushion for a kitchen chair and a person who likes the wave in blue.

One size, the square of a chair seat. The three patterns are the same size and fill.

Questions about the japanese cushions

What is a zabuton?

The flat floor cushion of a Japanese room: the seat at a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed. The round ones here are zabuton; the straw ones are the tea-room and temple versions; the plush ones are the same idea with a face.

What are they made of?

The straw cushions are coiled rush or straw, bound with cord. The cloth cushions have a cotton-mix cover, printed or napped, over a firm synthetic wadding. The plush ones are a short-pile plush over a soft fill. The fabric line on each page says which.

How big are they?

The rush cushion is 30 cm; the printed zabuton comes in 43, 49 or 59 cm; the others are the round of a seat, and the hamster is a child's chair. Every cushion is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Can I use them on a chair?

Yes. The square wave cushion is made for one; the round ones sit on a chair, a bench or a window seat as well as the floor. The straw ones are for the floor, a stool or a teapot.

How do I wash them?

Cloth and plush cushions: machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, dry flat, reshape when damp. Straw: keep dry, brush, air in the sun. The hamster is spot clean.
