About this piece
Plush cushion shaped as a cherry blossom with five petals and embroidered stamens
A cherry blossom to lean on. This cushion is shaped as the five-petalled flower of the cherry, each petal notched at its tip as the real one is, stuffed soft in a short-pile plush, with the stamens embroidered at the centre in orange thread with small dots, in three colours: a pale blue, a pink and a yellow. The title calls it a starfish, and from across a room it could be one, but the notched petals and the stamens are the cherry's.
It is the softest thing in the collection and the one for a sofa corner or a child's bed.
The name, Hitode, is the starfish, the sea star, and the shape is the cherry blossom's, which has five points too; the name is a joke and we keep it.
The cushion is two pieces of short-pile plush cut to the five-petal shape, sewn round the edge and stuffed with a soft synthetic fill, with the stamens embroidered on the top face in orange with white dots at the tips.
Put it on a sofa, a bed, a chair or a child's floor, and lean on it, hug it or sit on it; it is a cushion first and a toy second. The pink is the cherry's own colour; the blue and the yellow are the cherry in a mood.
The notches are the detail: each petal is cut with the small notch at the tip that separates a cherry blossom from a plum in Japanese drawing, and the embroidered stamens at the centre are five lines with dots, which is how the flower is drawn on a kimono.
Japan sits on the floor, and the cushion is the chair. On tatami or on boards it goes under a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed; in a Western room it goes on a sofa, a chair or a floor by the fire, and it is the thing a guest is handed. Every cushion in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Machine wash cool in a bag on a gentle cycle and dry flat; brush the pile when dry. It comes back to shape with a shake.
From across a room it is a soft five-pointed shape in colour. From close the points are petals with notches, the centre its stamens, and the plush its pile. It is the cushion for a child and a person who likes the blossom in three dimensions.
One size, the span of two hands. The three colours are the same size and fill.
Questions about the japanese cushions
What is a zabuton?
The flat floor cushion of a Japanese room: the seat at a low table, in front of a window, beside a bed. The round ones here are zabuton; the straw ones are the tea-room and temple versions; the plush ones are the same idea with a face.
What are they made of?
The straw cushions are coiled rush or straw, bound with cord. The cloth cushions have a cotton-mix cover, printed or napped, over a firm synthetic wadding. The plush ones are a short-pile plush over a soft fill. The fabric line on each page says which.
How big are they?
The rush cushion is 30 cm; the printed zabuton comes in 43, 49 or 59 cm; the others are the round of a seat, and the hamster is a child's chair. Every cushion is photographed at the same scale, so the pages compare.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Can I use them on a chair?
Yes. The square wave cushion is made for one; the round ones sit on a chair, a bench or a window seat as well as the floor. The straw ones are for the floor, a stool or a teapot.
How do I wash them?
Cloth and plush cushions: machine wash cool on a gentle cycle, dry flat, reshape when damp. Straw: keep dry, brush, air in the sun. The hamster is spot clean.
