About this piece

Light grey crinkle gauze with nothing on it, top and trousers, for the hottest weeks

This is the jinbei with nothing on it: a light grey top that wraps and ties at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth, with no embroidery, no trim and no contrast. The cloth is a crinkled cotton gauze, two thin layers woven together and puckered in the finish, and the pucker is the only pattern. One patch pocket on the hip. Sleeves to the elbow. That is all.

Plain jinbei are what the Japanese actually wear; the embroidered ones are for the shops. This is the version for the person who wants the garment rather than the souvenir, in the grey that reads clean in the morning and calm at night.

The name, Usugumo, means thin cloud, the high haze of a summer sky, and it is the traditional name for a grey this light.

The gauze is cotton, crinkled in the finish rather than by ironing, so it never needs pressing and goes back to its texture after every wash. It is light enough to sleep in, thick enough to open the door in, and it dries on a line in an hour. Two layers keep it from being sheer.

Wear the top crossed left over right and knot the tie at the hip; the trousers sit at the waist on a soft band. At home it replaces a T-shirt and shorts and looks better than both. Out, with sandals, it is a summer outfit that reads like it belongs to someone who has been to Japan and paid attention.

Up close the crinkle shows its fine random pucker, and the seams show the straight, square construction of a garment that has not changed in two hundred years. From across a street it is a pale grey two-piece, and that is enough.

It goes with grey, white, black and bare feet. It is the plain set to buy first, before the navy or the black, because the light grey is the one that shows the cloth for what it is, and the cloth is the point.

Wash cold, hang, wear. The gauze softens a little with each wash and the crinkle comes back every time, so the set at the end of the summer is better than the set at the start, which is more than most summer clothes can say.

Sizes run from M to XXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the jinbei

What is a jinbei?

The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it cotton?

The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
