About this piece

Silver ring of a serene face flanked by two more, with gold eyes

Three faces on one ring. The central one is serene, eyes half-closed, hair in tight curls and a dot on the brow; at each side a smaller face turns outward, and at the far edges two small eyes set in gold look sideways. The whole is cast in silver, darkened in the recesses so the faces read, and it covers the finger from knuckle to knuckle.

It is the most sculptural ring in the collection and the one most people take a moment to read, and the calm face in the middle is what holds it.

The name, Kannon, is the bodhisattva of mercy, the one with many faces and many arms in the temple statues, and the ring is a small version of the many-faced image.

The ring is sterling silver, stamped 925 inside the band, cast as one piece about 25 mm across the front, the recesses darkened and the high points polished, with the two side eyes as gold-toned inlays. The band is open at the back and springs a little.

Wear it on the index or middle finger of either hand, and on its own. It is a ring for someone who wears one ring and wants it to be this one.

The side faces are the detail: they are the same face at a smaller scale, turned away, and they are what make the ring read as one figure with several aspects rather than as three portraits. The gold eyes at the edges are the last thing you see.

From across a table it is a silver face on a hand. From close the curls show their spirals, the side faces their turn, and the gold eyes their glint. It is the ring for someone who wants a figure and not a beast.

Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.

Silver darkens with time and skin, and this ring is meant to: the recesses are already blackened so the relief reads, and the high points polish themselves against your hand. Wipe with a soft cloth; a silver cloth brings the shine back when you want it. Take it off for the sea and the shower.

The band is open at the back and springs a little, so one size fits most hands: slide it on and it settles. It can be eased wider or narrower by hand once to set it.

Questions about the japanese rings

What is a Japanese ring?

A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.

How do I find my size?

Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.

Are they silver or steel?

Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Will the dark finish wear off?

The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.

How do I care for them?

Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
