About this piece

Samurai helmet ring, a masked face under a crested kabuto with neck guards

A helmet on a finger. This ring is a samurai kabuto in steel, the horned crest on top, the riveted bowl beneath it, a masked face with a grimace and a moustache under the brim, and the layered neck guards falling at either side with a crest on each. The recesses are darkened so every rivet and every plate reads, and the whole sits well proud of the finger.

It is the most detailed ring in the collection and the one people turn over in their hand, and the face under the helmet is what they look at.

The name, Kabuto, is the helmet, the samurai's, and the ring is one.

The ring is stainless steel, cast as one piece about 25 mm high, the recesses darkened and the high points polished, the neck guards forming the shoulders of the band.

Wear it on the index or middle finger of either hand, and on its own. It goes with the black clothes in the range and with the hakama, and it is a ring for someone who wants the armour without the sword.

The neck guards are the detail: they are modelled as the layered plates of the real thing, three deep, with a small crest on the outer plate of each side, and they wrap the finger. The face beneath the brim has the grimace of the iron masks that were worn under a kabuto.

From across a table it is a silver object on a hand. From close the object is a helmet, the rivets show their rows, and the face its grimace. It is the ring for someone who wanted the helmet in the museum.

Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.

Steel does not tarnish, does not turn a finger green and does not mind water, so this ring can be worn in the shower and the sea and wiped dry after. A soft cloth is all the care it needs; the darkened recesses are a finish, not dirt, and they stay.

Sizes are given as the inside circumference in millimetres: 57, 60, 62, 65, 67, 70. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger where the ring will sit, mark where it meets, and measure the strip flat. If you are between two sizes and the ring is wide, take the larger; a wide band needs more room than a thin one.

Questions about the japanese rings

What is a Japanese ring?

A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.

How do I find my size?

Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.

Are they silver or steel?

Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.

Are they made in Japan?

No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

Will the dark finish wear off?

The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.

How do I care for them?

Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
