About this piece
Two-faced mask ring, a horned demon one side and a gold-marked fox the other
Two masks on one ring, split down the middle. The left half is a horned demon, brow furrowed, mouth open in a grimace; the right half is a fox, ears up, eyes narrow, with gold-toned markings curling over its brow and cheek; the two are joined at the centre line and a flower is carved at the shoulder. The recesses are darkened, and the gold is the only colour.
It is the ring in the collection with the most going on across its face, and the split is the point: the demon and the fox are the two masks of the festival, the one that frightens and the one that tricks.
The name, Nimen, is two faces, and the ring has them.
The ring is stainless steel, cast as one piece about 26 mm high, the recesses darkened, the fox markings gold-toned, the shoulders carved with a flower on one side and scrolls on the other.
Wear it on the index or middle finger of either hand, and on its own. It goes with the black clothes in the range and with the mask pieces elsewhere in the shop, and it is a ring for someone who likes a face with two sides.
The join is the detail: the demon's horn and the fox's ear rise from the same centre line, and the two mouths meet at the chin, so the ring reads as one face from the front and as two from either side. The gold on the fox is curled like the markings on the paper masks.
From across a table it is a silver mask with a gold flash. From close the mask is two, the demon shows its horn, and the fox its gold. It is the ring for someone who cannot decide, and does not have to.
Steel does not tarnish, does not turn a finger green and does not mind water, so this ring can be worn in the shower and the sea and wiped dry after. A soft cloth is all the care it needs; the darkened recesses and the gold markings are finishes, and the gold will soften with years of wear.
Sizes are given as the inside circumference in millimetres: 55, 57, 60, 62, 66, 68, 70, 73. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger where the ring will sit, mark where it meets, and measure the strip flat. If you are between two sizes and the ring is wide, take the larger; a wide band needs more room than a thin one.
Questions about the japanese rings
What is a Japanese ring?
A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.
How do I find my size?
Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.
Are they silver or steel?
Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Will the dark finish wear off?
The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.
How do I care for them?
Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
