About this piece
The red of a shrine gate, washed until it looks lived in, edged in cream
The red of a torii gate is meant to stop you in the street. This jacket takes that red and lets the years into it: a vermilion softened to brick, with a dry, slubbed weave that shows lighter along the seams, the way a gate looks after twenty summers. Cream draws the outline, a narrow contrast edge down both fronts and a cream facing inside each elbow-length sleeve that shows when the cuff turns back. One red knot button sits at the chest, fastened or not.
It is the boldest colour in the edged family and the one most people are afraid of, which is a mistake. Faded red is a neutral in the way that faded denim is a neutral. It goes with white, black, grey, navy and cream, and it does not go with much else, which keeps decisions short.
The name, Shuiro, is the vermilion of shrine gates and lacquer bowls, the red with orange in it that Japan has used for anything sacred or celebratory for a thousand years. On this cloth it has been worn down to something you would wear on a Wednesday.
The cloth is a polyester weave with a matte, textured hand, chosen because a red this particular must stay this particular after washing, and because a layer for the warm months should weigh nothing. The fade is in the dye, not the wear, so it will not go further than it already has.
The cut is a short open kimono jacket with a hem at the hip. Knotted over a white tee, the cream edging and the white tee become one pale line through the red, and the front reads sharp. Open over black, the red frames the dark and the edging is the only light. It goes with raw denim, with black trousers, with white linen in summer, and with plain shoes.
Wear it when everyone else is in navy. That is most days, and this is the jacket for them.
The knot button is red, matched to the cloth rather than to the edging, so it disappears when fastened and the cream line runs unbroken from collar to hem. That is a small choice and it is the right one. A cream button would have been a third colour, and this jacket only needs two.
Sizes run from M to 5XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the kimono jacket
Is a kimono jacket the same as a haori?
No. A haori has a collar band folded back on itself and is worn open over a kimono. A kimono jacket has a plain faced edge, closes with a single toggle or tie, and is cut to sit over a T-shirt.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it silk?
No. Each piece is cotton, linen or polyester, as stated in its description and on the inner label. We never sell silk as something else, or something else as silk.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Open, over a plain T-shirt, with denim or dark trousers. Elbow-length sleeves make it a spring and autumn layer; long sleeves carry into winter over a knit.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with similar colours. Hang to dry. Iron on low, inside out over any print or embroidery.
What we sell, and what we don't
