About this piece
Open silver phoenix ring, tail feathers curling one way and head the other
The bird wraps the finger. This open ring is a phoenix drawn in silver, its tail feathers spreading and curling round one side of the finger in engraved plumes, its body the band, and its crested head rising on the other side, with two characters engraved inside where only the wearer sees them. The finish is matte with the engraving darkened.
It is the most delicate ring in the collection with a creature on it, and the tail is what makes it: five feathers, each drawn separately.
The name, Hane, is the feather, the wing, and the ring is mostly feathers.
The ring is sterling silver, stamped 925 inside the band, cast as one piece and engraved after, the tail about 20 mm long and the head about 10 mm, with a matte finish and darkened lines. It is open where the tail and the head pass each other, and it adjusts.
Wear it on the index, middle or ring finger of either hand, and on its own or with a slim band. It goes with anything, and it is the ring in the collection most often chosen for a woman, though it is cut for any hand.
The feathers are the detail: each plume has an eye at its tip like a peacock's, and the lines between them are engraved and darkened so the tail reads at a distance. The head has a small crest and a curled beak.
From across a table it is a silver bird on a hand. From close the feathers show their eyes, the head its crest, and the inside its two characters. It is the ring for someone who wants the phoenix and not the dragon.
Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.
Silver darkens with time and skin, and this ring is meant to: the recesses are already blackened so the relief reads, and the high points polish themselves against your hand. Wipe with a soft cloth; a silver cloth brings the shine back when you want it. Take it off for the sea and the shower.
The band is open at the back, so one size fits most hands: slide it on, then press the ends gently together or apart to set it. It is meant to be adjusted a few times, not every day; find the size and leave it.
Questions about the japanese rings
What is a Japanese ring?
A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.
How do I find my size?
Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.
Are they silver or steel?
Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Will the dark finish wear off?
The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.
How do I care for them?
Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
