About this piece
Pale grey in a smooth chambray weave, the jinbei that looks like a shirt
The cloth on this Japanese nightwear set is a flat, fine weave rather than a crinkled gauze, pale grey with the slight fleck of a chambray, so the top looks closer to a good shirt than to a pyjama. It wraps and ties at the side, carries one patch pocket, stops at the elbow in the sleeve, and comes with loose trousers in the same cloth. Nothing is embroidered or trimmed. The weave is the texture.
It is the jinbei in the range that reads least like loungewear and most like a garment you could answer the door in, because a flat pale grey has the manners of a shirt, and the cut, square and tied, has the ease of a robe.
The name, Shironezu, is the old name for the palest grey, white with a little mouse in it, the colour of an overcast morning, and the cloth is that colour.
The weave is cotton, smooth rather than crinkled, with a dry hand that takes an iron for a crisp collar and does without one for a soft one. It is light, it breathes, and it dries fast, and the pale grey shows less than white after a night on a sofa.
Wear the top crossed left over right and knot the tie at the hip; the trousers sit at the waist on a soft band. At home it is the set for the whole day, from the first coffee to the last. Out, with sandals, it is a summer outfit that reads clean and slightly formal, the way a pale shirt does.
Up close the weave shows its fleck, pale threads crossing paler ones. From across a garden it is a light grey two-piece with a straight line and one pocket, and it looks like it was made for the person wearing it.
It goes with grey, white, navy and bare feet. Of the smooth-weave sets, this is the pale one, and the one that photographs like a hotel.
The trousers are the same pale weave, cut loose with a soft band at the waist, and they take a crease if you give them one. The set washes cold and dries fast, and the pale grey comes out of the machine looking like it did going in.
Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.
Questions about the jinbei
What is a jinbei?
The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.
Does it run small?
Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.
Is it cotton?
The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.
Is it made in Japan?
No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
How do I wear it?
Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.
What we sell, and what we don't
Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
