About this piece

Long black cargo shorts with a dropped rise, a drawstring and a front zip

The only shorts in the collection that are not denim or leather-look, and the longest. These are black cargo shorts in a soft woven cloth, cut with a dropped rise so the crotch sits low, a drawstring waist with long cream cords that hang to the thigh, a metal zip at the fly, and a flap cargo pocket on each leg, with the hem below the knee.

It is the short for someone who wears joggers the rest of the year, and the dropped rise is what makes it walk like one.

The name, Kurokage, is the black shadow, and the shorts are one with pockets.

The cloth is a soft woven polyester-cotton blend with a dry, matte hand, chosen because a cargo short should weigh nothing, take a pocket square and wash without a thought, and this one does. The cut is a long relaxed cargo short with a dropped rise and an elastic drawstring waist.

Wear them with a white tee and white trainers, as in the photograph, which is the outfit every pair in this collection was photographed in and the one they are all best in. A black tee in the evening, a camp shirt open over the top, and nothing else with a pattern.

The rise is cut low on purpose and the leg is wide, so the shorts hang from the drawstring rather than sitting on the hip, and the cream cords are the one pale thing on them, long enough to knot twice. The zip at the fly is exposed, which is the detail.

They wash cold, inside out, and dry on a line in an hour; the cloth does not crease and does not need an iron.

From across a street they are long black shorts with cream cords. From close the zip shows its metal, the pockets their flaps, and the cords their length. They are the pair for a hot day that started in joggers.

The pockets are the working ones of a cargo, deep, with a flap and a button, and the front slash pockets are cut wide for a hand. The waist is elastic under the cords, so the shorts stay up whatever the cords are doing.

Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the japanese shorts

What kind of shorts are these?

Denim shorts in the Japanese street style, knee-length and relaxed: washed, frayed, pieced, patched, embroidered or printed, with one pair in leather-look synthetic and one long cargo short in a woven cloth. Every page says which, and every pair was photographed with a white tee and white trainers.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

What is it made of?

Cotton denim for the denim shorts, raw or washed as the page says; a synthetic leather for the studded pair; a polyester-cotton blend for the cargo short.

Will the fraying continue?

A little, then it stops at the stitching. Raw hems are cut and washed once before they reach you, so the fray has started and settled.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wash it?

Cold, inside out, with their own colour the first time, and hang to dry. Rhinestones go in a wash bag; the leather-look pair is wiped, not washed.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
