About this piece
Silver cat ring that wraps round the finger with a curled tail and red eyes
The cat holds on. This ring is a small silver cat wrapped round the finger, its head and paws at the front, its body and curled tail making the band, and two small red stones set for eyes. The fur is textured in short cuts, the ears are up, and the tail loops back to meet the paws, so the ring closes on itself without a join.
It is the softest ring in the collection and the one that gets picked up first, and the red eyes are what do it: a silver cat with a stare.
The name, Nemuri, is sleep, the cat's other occupation, and this one is between a nap and a pounce.
The ring is sterling silver, stamped 925 inside the band, cast as one piece with the fur cut in after, and the eyes are two faceted red stones set in claws. The band is the cat's own body, open at the back where the tail meets the paws.
Wear it on the index or ring finger, where the cat has room to sit up, and on its own. It is a ring for either hand, and it goes as easily with a sweatshirt as with a dress.
The tail is the detail: it curls into a full loop at the side of the band, and it is what you feel when you turn the ring with your thumb. The paws are separate from the head and reach forward over the top of the finger.
From across a table it is a silver cat on a hand. From close the fur shows its cuts, the eyes their red, and the tail its loop. It is the ring for a person with a cat, or one who wants one.
Every ring in the collection is photographed on the same pale ground at the same scale, so the pages compare with each other: what looks big here is big on the hand. The measurements given are taken across the face, not round the finger.
Silver darkens with time and skin, and this ring is meant to: the recesses are already blackened so the relief reads, and the high points polish themselves against your hand. Wipe with a soft cloth; a silver cloth brings the shine back when you want it. Take it off for the sea and the shower.
The band is open at the back, so one size fits most hands: slide it on, then press the ends gently together or apart to set it. It is meant to be adjusted a few times, not every day; find the size and leave it.
Questions about the japanese rings
What is a Japanese ring?
A ring built on Japanese imagery: dragons, koi, guardian lions, temple deities, sutras and Sanskrit seed syllables, helmets and masks. Most are sculpted in the round rather than set with stones.
How do I find my size?
Sizes are the inside circumference in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper round the finger, mark where it meets and measure it flat. For a wide band, take the larger of two sizes. Open bands are one size and adjust by hand.
Are they silver or steel?
Both, and each page says which. The silver rings are sterling silver stamped 925 inside the band; the steel rings are stainless steel, some with a black or gold-toned finish. Neither turns a finger green.
Are they made in Japan?
No. They are a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.
Will the dark finish wear off?
The darkening in the recesses is deliberate and stays; the high points polish with wear, which is how the relief is meant to read. Gold-toned and black coatings soften over years of daily wear.
How do I care for them?
Wipe with a soft cloth. Silver darkens with time and a silver cloth brings it back; take silver off for the sea and the shower. Steel can be worn in water and dried after.
What we sell, and what we don't
