About this piece

Peonies and butterflies in mauve on cream crinkle cotton, with a frilled wrap top

The peonies on this sleep set are printed in mauve on cream, large and soft-edged, with butterflies drifting between them, and the print covers both the wrap top and the straight trousers so the set reads as one garden. The top crosses and ties at the side, and its edge is finished with a narrow frill in dusty rose, the one solid colour on the set, running from the collar to the hem. Long sleeves. A crinkled cotton that stands off the skin and breathes.

It is the most romantic of the pyjama sets and the one that reads least like nightwear, because a wrap top with a frilled edge is closer to a blouse than a pyjama, and the print is closer to wallpaper than to a nightie.

The name, Botanchou, is peony and butterfly, the two things on the cloth, drawn together the way Japanese textiles have drawn them for three hundred years, because the butterfly is the peony's guest. It is a good guest.

The print is printed, not embroidered, with the mauve kept soft so the flowers look watercoloured. The crinkle is in the finish of the cotton, so it never needs ironing and comes back after every wash.

The trousers are straight, with a soft band at the waist, in the same print, and the frilled top sits over them tied at the hip. Wear it to sleep in, to breakfast, and to the garden with a cardigan if the morning is cool.

Up close the peonies show their layers and the butterflies show their wings, and the frill shows its gather. From across a bedroom it is a pale set with a mauve garden on it and a rose line down the front.

Wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own and there is nothing to iron. The set at the end of the winter is softer than the set at the start, which is how loungewear should age.

It goes with bare feet, a cup of tea, and a window with a plant in it. Of the printed pyjamas, this is the warm one; the blue version beside it is the cool.

Sizes run from M to XL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual. Between two sizes, take the larger.

Questions about the jinbei

What is a jinbei?

The Japanese summer two-piece: a short wrap top tied at the side, and loose trousers in the same cloth. It is worn at home, in the garden and to the evening festivals. Every set here comes as top and trousers together.

Does it run small?

Yes. Our pieces are cut to Asian sizing, which runs smaller than US sizing. Take one size up from your usual; between two sizes, take the larger. Measurements taken flat are in the size guide.

Is it cotton?

The jinbei sets and the pyjama sets are cotton, crinkled gauze or a smooth weave, as stated on each page. The short and long crane robes are polyester satin, and their pages say so. We never sell one as the other.

Is it made in Japan?

No. It is a Japanese design, made in Asia. We say so on every page.

How do I wear it?

Cross the left front over the right and knot the side tie at the hip. The trousers sit on a soft waistband. A plain T-shirt underneath for cooler evenings, sandals for going out.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold with similar colours and hang to dry; the crinkle in the gauze comes back on its own, no ironing needed. Satin robes go inside out on a gentle cycle and onto a hanger.

What we sell, and what we don't

Japanese designs, made in Asia. Cotton, linen or polyester as stated on each piece, never silk. We say so on every page, because the alternative is selling you a word instead of a garment.
