Black body, cream sleeves, ribbing black with gold stripes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is the fox sukajan, the one for the shrine at Fushimi and the thousand red gates, and the fox on it is the messenger of the god those gates belong to, drawn calm in the middle of its own fire.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe name, Kitsunebi, is fox-fire, the ghost lights the old stories said foxes lit in the fields at night, and the red flames on the back are those lights.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light quilted lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, which is the construction the sukajan has had since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka in the late forties. It zips at the front and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black for the white fox to be the only light. Nothing else with a pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom across a street it is a black-and-cream bomber with a white animal on the back. From close the fox has every hair of its brush, the flames every tongue in three reds, and the gold ring its stitches. It is the sukajan for someone who has been to the gates and wants to remember them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sleeves are set in raglan, and the flames on the chest run onto them from the shoulder, red on cream, so the arms carry the fire down to the cuff. The gold in the ribbing picks up the ring on the back.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSizes run from M to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual.
