On the chest, two small dragons face each other across the zip, grey with red mouths. The sleeves are blue in the photograph, a bright satin blue with blue-striped ribbing; the other version has them in beige.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is the sukajan closest to the first souvenir jackets, the one that names where it came from, and the dragon between the words is the one the sailors asked for most.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe name, Tatsumi, is the south-east, the direction of the dragon on the old compass, and the name of the district by the bay the jackets were sold in.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light quilted lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, which is the construction the sukajan has had since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka in the late forties. It zips at the front and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black to make the blue sleeves the colour. Nothing else with a pattern, and nothing else with words.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom across a street it is a black bomber with blue sleeves and lettering on the back. From close the dragon has every scale in red and grey, the script every loop, and the small dragons on the chest their red tongues. It is the sukajan for someone who wants the jacket the sailors actually took home.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sleeves are set in raglan, plain, so the words and the dragon have the back to themselves, which is how the souvenir jackets were made. The script across the shoulders is the cursive of the fifties, and the block letters at the hem are the city, embroidered in cream.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSizes run from M to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual.
