surugadai-hokusai-poster-sundai
Surugadai Hokusai Poster 'Sundai'

Hokusai print of the hill at Surugadai, a pine over an Edo street and Fuji

A pine leaning over a street, and the mountain far off. This is Hokusai's view from the Surugadai hill in Edo: a great pine bends from the left over a road where townspeople walk and a porter carries a load, a tiled roof rises at the right, green slopes fill the middle, and Fuji sits small and white on the horizon under a sky that fades from cream to blue. It is one of the quieter views in the series, and the mountain is the smallest thing in it.

It is the print for a person who wants Fuji in the picture and not in the centre.

The name, Sundai, is the old short name for Surugadai, the hill in Edo the view is taken from, and the print is that hill on a morning.

The print is reproduced from the woodblock print on a textured canvas, stretched round a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, so it hangs without a frame and without glass. The colours are the print's own: the deep Prussian blue, the cream of the paper, the greens and the rose of the sky. The cartouche with the series title and the artist's signature is printed in the corner, as on the Edo sheet.

Hang it on a single nail at eye level, alone or in a row of three with two others from the series, which is how they look best. It goes above a desk, a sofa or a bed.

The pine is the detail: it leans out of the frame at the top left with its needles drawn in dark clumps, and it is the shape the eye follows down to the street. The walkers below are drawn small and in motion, and one carries a bundle on a pole.

Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from a radiator, which loosens the canvas.

From across a room it is a green and cream picture with a dark tree. From close the walkers show their loads, the roof its tiles, and Fuji its size. It is the print for a hallway and a person who likes a view with people in it.

Three sizes: 40 by 60 cm, 50 by 75 cm and 60 by 90 cm. The smallest suits a shelf or a small wall, the middle a desk, the largest a wall on its own. The image is the same in all three.
