Two on the chest, one on each sleeve, and a large one across the back, all in the shadow thread, with clouds in the same tone and red cherry blossom scattered through everything in the only bright colour. The front closes with snaps. The ribbing is black with a red stripe.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is the sukajan for someone who wants the embroidery and not the announcement, and it is the one that looks different in every light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe name, Sumiryu, is the ink dragon, the animal drawn in a colour that is almost the colour of the page.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, the construction of every sukajan since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka. It closes with snap buttons and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over black for a jacket that is black on black with red petals. It goes with everything dark and with nothing else patterned.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom across a street it is a black bomber with red flecks. From close the dragons appear, every scale in the shadow thread, and the blossom shows its petals in three reds. It is the sukajan that rewards the person standing next to you and the light in the room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sleeves are set in raglan, each with its own dragon in the shadow thread, and the red blossom runs across everything at random, so no two jackets scatter it the same way. The snaps are black, the ribbing black with one red line, and the jacket zips nowhere.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSizes run from M to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual.
