senju-riverside-japanese-poster-bushu
Senju Riverside Japanese Poster 'Bushu'

Hokusai print of the Senju riverside, a horse led past a rice-field sluice and Fuji

A horse, a groom, and a wooden frame taller than both. This is Hokusai's view at Senju, on the road north out of Edo: a groom in a straw hat leads a horse loaded with baggage past the tall wooden frame of a sluice gate, two men bend at the left over a ditch, rice fields run back in green and yellow, and Fuji rises small and blue beyond the trees at the right. The frame is the largest thing in the picture and the mountain the smallest.

It is one of the working views in the series, where the people are doing something and the mountain is what they see when they look up.

The name, Bushu, is the old short name for Musashi, the province of the print's title, and the picture is a road in it.

The print is reproduced from the woodblock print on a textured canvas, stretched round a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, so it hangs without a frame and without glass. The colours are the print's own: the deep Prussian blue, the cream of the paper, the greens and the rose of the sky. The cartouche with the series title and the artist's signature is printed in the corner, as on the Edo sheet.

Hang it on a single nail at eye level, alone or in a row of three with two others from the series, which is how they look best. It goes above a desk, a sofa or a bed.

The sluice frame is the detail: four tall posts with cross-pieces, drawn in pale wood against the sky, and the horse walks through them as through a gate. The groom's hat is a wide straw disc, and the horse's load is tied in bundles on either side.

Every print in the collection is photographed on the same wall at the same scale, so the pages compare.

Dust with a soft dry cloth or a brush; do not wet it. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the blue over years, and away from a radiator, which loosens the canvas.

From across a room it is a pale picture with a horse and a frame. From close the horse shows its load, the groom his hat, and the fields their rows. It is the print for a kitchen or a hallway and a person who likes a scene with work in it.

Three sizes: 40 by 60 cm, 50 by 75 cm and 60 by 90 cm. The smallest suits a shelf or a small wall, the middle a desk, the largest a wall on its own. The image is the same in all three.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1055/3386/6332/files/senju-riverside-japanese-poster-bushu-1.jpg?v=1790585656
