sake-set
Sake Set 'Tokkuri'

Sake set in speckled stoneware with blue carp, flask, warming jar and six cups

A carp on every piece, and a jar to warm the flask in. This sake set is a cream stoneware flecked with brown, each piece painted with a blue carp mid-leap: a flask with a narrow neck, a cork stopper and a cord round it, a tall jar the flask stands in to be warmed in hot water, six small cups with a blue rim, and a round tray with a blue edge to carry it all. The photographs show the set on the tray, the flask in the jar, and a pair of hands pouring.

It is the set for sake served the Japanese way, warm in winter and cold in summer, and the warming jar is what makes it more than a bottle and cups.

The name, Tokkuri, is the flask, the narrow-necked bottle sake is poured from, and the set is built round it.

Every piece is a glazed stoneware with a speckled cream body and a blue underglaze, the carp painted by brush on each, the flask stoppered with cork on a cord, the cups small enough to hold in a curled hand, and the tray flat with a low rim. The jar is open, the height of the flask, for hot water.

Use it as it is meant: fill the jar with hot water, stand the flask in it for a few minutes, and pour for a guest, who pours for you; nobody pours for themselves. Cold, the flask goes straight to the tray. The cups hold two mouthfuls, which is the right amount, and six of them means a table.

The carp is the detail: the same fish on the flask, the jar and every cup, painted in a strong blue with its scales and its fins, leaping on each piece in the same direction, so the set reads as a school. The cork on its cord is the other, because a stoppered flask keeps sake overnight.

From across a table it is a cream set with blue fish. From close the fish show their scales, the stoneware its speckles, and the rim its blue line. It is the set for a person who serves sake and wants the jar.

Wash by hand in warm water; the stoneware takes a dishwasher but the cork does not. Dry the jar upside down.

Full set: one flask, one warming jar, six cups and one tray. The flask holds a serving for a table; every piece is photographed at the same scale as the rest of the tableware, so the pages compare.
