On the chest, a smaller phoenix on the left and an orange tiger in grey waves on the right, facing each other across the zip. The ribbing is navy.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is the only sukajan in the range in one colour of blue, and the one that reads most like an evening, because silver on midnight is the palette of the sky the bird is named for.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe name, Houou, is the phoenix itself, the bird of the Japanese imperial crest, drawn here at full wingspan.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery motif is embroidered, not printed, in dense satin stitch that stands off the cloth and catches the light differently as you move; that is the whole point of a sukajan, and it is the reason the jacket weighs what it does. The body is a satin blend with a soft sheen and a light quilted lining, and the collar, cuffs and hem are a ribbed knit, which is the construction the sukajan has had since the first ones were sewn for American sailors in Yokosuka in the late forties. It zips at the front and has a slash pocket at each hip. It washes cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle, and dries flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWear it over a white tee and white trousers, as in the photograph, or over navy with dark denim for a jacket that is all one blue with a silver bird on it. Nothing else with a pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom across a street it is a navy bomber with a pale shape on the back. From close the phoenix has every feather in silver and cream, the blossom every petal, and the tiger on the chest every stripe. It is the sukajan for the person who wants a bird rather than a beast, and the best bird in the range.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sleeves are set in raglan, plain navy, and the phoenix's wings run onto them from the shoulder, so the bird's span is the width of the jacket with the arms out. The gold ring on the back is the moon the bird is rising to, and the ribbing is navy so nothing interrupts the blue.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSizes run from M to XXXL. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual.
