They overlap across a black ground in long pointed shapes, each one filled with a different pattern, a cream checkerboard, a field of blue dots, a fine black-and-cream check, a plain cream, so the print reads as a pile of leaves cut from other cloth and laid on the robe. The obi is cream, wide and flat, and it is the one plain surface on the garment.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is the most graphic of the men's kimono and the most playful, because it takes a natural shape and fills it with geometry, which is a trick Japanese textile designers have enjoyed for three hundred years. It looks like a leaf print from across the room and like a patchwork from across the table.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe name, Hiroha, means broad leaf, the wide-leaved trees of the Japanese hills, and the print is those leaves drawn large enough to notice.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is printed, not pieced, with the edges of every leaf kept sharp and the patterns inside kept legible down to the smallest dot. The cloth is polyester with a dry hand and a slight texture, chosen because black must stay black around cream and blue, and because a kimono for the warm months should hang light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe obi is included. Cross the fronts left over right, wrap the cream obi twice at the waist and knot it at the hip. On a print this busy the obi is a rest, and the cream is the right colour for it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt three metres it is a black robe with pale leaves on it. At thirty centimetres each leaf shows the pattern it is filled with, and the overlaps show which leaf lies on top. It is a print built to be looked at twice, and it is one of the best-drawn in the range.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe cut is long, falling to the ankle, with wide square sleeves and the room to walk. Worn at home it is a robe with a puzzle on it. Worn out with dark sandals it is a summer outfit that reads bold from the street and clever from the table, and it goes with black, cream and nothing else patterned.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSizes run from M to XL, by height. It is cut to Asian sizing and runs small, so take one size up from your usual.
